[Bug 985346] New: [UEFI] Tumbleweed install only works every second time
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=985346 Bug ID: 985346 Summary: [UEFI] Tumbleweed install only works every second time Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader Assignee: jsrain@suse.com Reporter: asarai@suse.de QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Yes, you read that right. I'm using Secure Boot (with the standard setup with the installer wrt the signing keys). This is all happening on a Dell Latitude E7450. Using *precisely* the same software choices, an openSUSE install will succeed but you will be unable to boot into the system (you get dropped into a GRUB console). Immediately before the GRUB shell, there is a message about "sha256 checksum missing" or something like that -- it's only there for a flash. My guess is that it's some horrible UEFI bug, since I'm wiping the hard drive each time I reinstall. I would hope that you don't need me to reinstall my laptop too many times while debugging this issue. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Any chance to provide logs from the failed attempt to install?
To be clear, the install doesn't fail. It's just that the resulting system won't boot normally with GRUB (GRUB just drops to an emergency shell). How does one get logs from GRUB when it drops you to the emergency shell? As I said, the only thing I got a glimpse of when trying to boot is a message about a "sha256 checksum missing" (it only appears for a flash before being dropped to a shell). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

2. YaST attempts to create a too small btrfs partition in some circumstances. This causes the install failure.
This is something that I've opened a new boo#995782 to track, since this is an issue that happens completely separately to this bug.
On the third install, the same partitions are created as the first install. However, I manually overrided to partitioner to create the second partition setup, and also disabled Secure Boot in the firmware and in bootloader settings. This also failed to boot after install.
Can you try to do this third reinstall again with the same setup as the first install? I found in my testing that the failures are on alternating installs (the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc installs would boot properly). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

There appears to be multiple issues at play here:
3. GRUB is unable to boot with cryptodisk (maybe to do with UEFI Secure Boot?). This causes "error: Couldn't load sha256 hash." and "error: no such cryptodisk foud."
It's fixed in Tumbleweed snapshot 20160826. And yes, it's UEFI Secure Boot related, as the sha256 module is missing from the signed grub.efi image. The new cryptsetup has changed it's default to sha256 for luks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
