You can utilize some test using the library itself, fx.: https://libgd.github.io/manuals/2.3.3/files/preamble-txt.html and e. g. check whether jpg or png file are really created and have respective formats. And yes, gd tools are built even if gd/gd2 formats are disabled. After doing all initialization the window which shows the progress of package installation does only show the countdown of the top repository, but the count of the other repositories remains the same. Apparently packages from the other repositories are installed as well, but this is not shown.
