The bootloader installation stage failed. Then failed after re-run with default values (GRUB2-EFI still) and then failed after re-run with ELILO installation attempt. Yes, the last attempt was with ELILO despite the fact there is /usr/sbin/grub2-efi-install in the text. Installation completes normally on an EFI system but at the end creation of the initrd fails. System emitted steady beeps, and screen is black with "GRUB" as the only word in the upper left corner. Used supergrub2 CD to get system rebooted. For what it is worth, I've had this issue with kernel updates too; the kernel is installed in the /boot directory however, the boot menus are not updated to reflect new load. updates were applied as a regular user and prompted for the root password. I checked the apper man page but did not see any options to have it print a log of what it did. Because it runs /usr/sbin/grub2-install which was compiled with "grub2" transform, it looks for architecture specific modules under /usr/lib/grub2/{i386,x86_64}-efi. This directory does not exist because it is unstalled under different prefix - /usr/lib/grub2-efi. Even if it existed, grub2-efi is not yet updated when grub2 post runs; it has to be done in grub2-efi post. I set it to MAJOR because effectively it means core.img (or grub{32,64}.efi) is NOT updated on update on UEFI systems. Leading to any hard to debug errors (when it tries to access modules from different version). This is related to https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782891. Unifying grub2 and grub2-efi would eliminate this issue entirely. Alternative clean fix would be to split each /usr/lib/grub2/${target} in separate subpackage and run grub2-install with explicit --target=${target} in each subpackage. Is there any mailing list where this can be discussed (it is probably not for Bugzilla)? I think that for 12.2 the minimal fix is to add grub2-efi-mkconfig to grub2-efi post and explicitly specify --target in post for grub2 package. WDYT? In the installer, I set grub2 to be installed on "/boot" which should be "/dev/sda6" on this particular system. Everything seemed to go fine. I was able to boot into the system, with a grub2 entry on my 12.2 install that was set to chainload sda6. I have no idea why that worked. When I look at the first sector of "/dev/sda6", it contains only binary zeros. It looks as if the boot sector was never written. After update was finished, I found menu entry for GRUB2 in GRUB1 menu.lst, but it was unusable. Grubs postinstall script creates entry pointing to /boot/grub2/core.img, but grub2-install creates core.img under /boot/grub2/i386-pc (or more general ${grub_modinfo_target_cpu}-$grub_modinfo_platform). On the related note, preuninstall script also does not take into account architecture subdirectories and tries to remove stuff from /boot/grub2 and not from /boot/grub2/i386-pc. Testing loading of memtest.bin seems to work although Fedora changelog suggests this can fail sometimes. - removed unused parts which are not really needed for memtest I am not sure whether this should go into grub2 or memtest86+ package.
