User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:10.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/10.0.2 Since I started building kiwi live systems with openSUSE 12.1, I'm observing a subtle bug. It seems that sometimes, not all files/directories get created properly, e.g. the directory /var/lib/empty is missing regularly. When this happens, there is no indication of it in the kiwi log. I'm attaching a tar file which contains * config.xml : A sample configuration to trigger the bug. * config.sh : Very simple script, it just checks for /var/lib/empty and fails ('exit 1') if this dir doesn't exist. * doit.sh : A script which mounts /dev/sr1 to /mnt/suse and then repeatedly runs 'kiwi --prepare...' until it fails. * kiwi.log : A log from one of my tests where it failed. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. unpack attached tar 2. insert the SUSE-12.1 DVD into /dev/sr0 3. Run doit.sh doit.sh will call kiwi at most 10 times. On my test system, this is usually enough to trigger the bug, but sometimes I have to call it again. Actual Results: config.sh fails because /var/lib/empty is missing. Expected Results: No missing files/directories. I'm currently testing openSUSE 12.1 inside VirtualBox, which is hosted on 11.4. Therefore, there is also the possibility that data corruption by 11.4's VirtualBox is causing this. I tried to rule this out by creating sha1sums of all files on the SUSE-12.1 DVD repeatedly. Since 30 loops produced the same result, I don't think it's the fault of VirtualBox. It's not just /var/lib/empty which is missing. I once observed that /etc/alternatives lost most of its content, e.g. vim was missing and I couldn't call vi directly. During my testruns, I also observed other failures of the kiwi build process. I suspect that these failures are related to the same bug. The package/pattern list in config.xml is minimal (for me); I wasn't able to reproduce the bug without pattern:base and kernel-default. I'm not sure what causes this behaviour, maybe it's a bug somewhere in rpm ...? On the other hand, I also occasionally install openSUSE 12.1 directly via "zypper -R /mnt/new_root install packages...". I never observed this bug when doing so. Clicking this link should retrieve the actual (or latest) buildlog and shows it as a plain textfile in the browser. Most of the time this however delivers an outdated logfile. An example is the package python-kde4 in the repository KDE:Distro:Factory. This morning around 5am CET, the build went wrong. The build was corrected and rebuilds were triggered afterwards. The webpage build log itself shows the latest log (from 12:08 CET), but clicking the link "Download Logfile" retrieves and shows the old logfile from 5am in the morning. This behavior is happening when there is a build that failed before. I am not sure what happens tomorrow. The file was copied to /usr/share/cups... where it was found and printing was set up. The test page was fine. I did not have any (known) problems on SuSE 12.1. In printing something from the web, I did not get the document but instead a page that said ERROR NAME; stackunderflow COMMAND; pop OPERAND STACK Other documents produce different messages. I saved the document to a .pdf file. lpr-ing it to the printer gave the same message. Converting to .ps via pdf2ps then produced a blank page. Converting to .ps via pdftops produced a correct printout. A pdf document produced from pdflatex prints just fine. But pdf2ps applied to it yields a blank page. Also, okular also seems to print pdf documents fine. So the problem appears to be with ghostscript conversions that can be invoked by the printer (CUPS?) driver. The problem is new in 12.2. I saw nothing like this in 12.1. I believe it is different from the 'setoverprintmode' problem in other reports. I do not get this message (and the poppler-based pdftops is OK). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. produce a short .pdf file. (It may or may not print fine with lpr) 2. apply pdf2ps 3. lpr the .ps file Actual Results: If the .pdf file is produced by something based on ghostscript (perhaps from a web script), error messages will happen when lpr-ed to a printer. The file generated via pdf2ps gives a blank page. These claims are true for the HL-5340D printer. I do not know about other printers. Expected Results: All files should print correctly via lpr. The ppd file can be provided if needed. Actual Results: All attempts to operate the package management with zypper or Yast2 produce an error message stating packagekit has blocked the operation. Clicking 'yes' to kill packagekit does not work. The user is presented with unending prompts to kill pakagekit until clicking 'no' & abandoning attempts to use the package management system. Attempting to use packagekit to make package changes produces a non responsive dialog. Nothing further happens. Expected Results: The package management system will promptly be able to operate without hindrance upon installation of the operating system. Only way to fix the problem: 1) Open Apper Updater & reconfigure to 'never' check. 2) Set "apper" to not automatically start. (In KDE, that's at "Configure Desktop" --> "Startup and Shutdown" --> "Service Manager") 3) Reboot & remove packagekit (and apper). It is encrypted with aes. My Intel Core i5 supports the AES instructions set. However, on boot, no aes kernel module is loaded at all. Thus, only the built-in aes is used. The "detection" for the correct aes module works: karl:~ # modprobe -v aes insmod /lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/kernel/arch/x86/crypto/aesni-intel.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-aes.ko WARNING: Error inserting padlock_aes (/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-aes.ko): No such device Adding aes to the modules that are loaded on boot by editing /etc/sysconfig/kernel, increases dm-crypt AES performance on tmpfs from 40-50MB/s to 170-180MB/s!
