The idea is to be able to run user defined commands in various stages of kiwi boot process, without modifying the boot image, sort of 'dynamic hooks'. The command would simply be specified by a variable in config.MAC (or even as a kernel parameter), which is then run in the runHook procedure (this has advantage that with minimal modification, it allows us to run command at lots of different and already well defined/documented stages of boot process). It makes good sense to name the variable (to be run before a hook <hookname> ) simply as KIWI_CMD_<hookname>, e.g. KIWI_CMD_postconfig='chmod +x /config/root/bin/myrun.sh' ============= my concerns =========== This is for sure pretty helpful and simplifies the use of the hooks but I'm not sure if we should do this for the following reasons: 1) every hook would then unconditionally evaluate the code from KIWI_CMD_<hookname>, KIWI_CMD_<hookname>_ variables. People could do very nasty things with it 2) it's hard to debug 3) one can influence the behavior of the boot code to a pretty large degree by just providing a kernel parameter I'm aware that we already have some code which points into the same direction and people can argue that we never should have done that but I'd like to avoid adding more of them basically the concept of the hooks was to allow custom modifications which are not generic enough to become part of the official code. The intention was not to make it totally easy to run _something_ as part of the initrd. I see that ata error recovery is not happening properly in case of drive timeouts, NCQ errors. The same is working fine with RHEL 6.3. Given below are the git commits that need to be ported to SLES 11 SP2 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/jejb/scsi.git;a=history;f=drivers… on above link if possible all libsas patch from 2012-02-19 need to be ported, there are several fixes. These commits are almost self-contain, except sas_drain_work patch which can open code as RH do on RHEL6.3. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Connect PM8001 SAS/SATA PCIe controller to the sytem. 2. Connect SATA drives (direct attached or behind expanders. 3. Start stress test runs on these drives using the controller. Actual Results: After sometime the stress test reports 0/0 for reads/writes. The logs show that some SATA drives have timed out and the error recovery procedure is not successful in recovering the same. Once the error happens the drive is not responding to any of the commands from the host. Also other good drives also does not respond to the commands. Note: The same issue is not happening in rhel 6.3 i. recovery seems to work fine. Expected Results: libata should have successfully recovered the drive using hard reset and revalidation. Using the same setup and drives RHEL 6.3 is working fine.
