Beside this the actual hwclock program will only use the drift informations in /etc/adjtime if and only if the --adjust option is used. This change of the behaviour of hwclock is also visible in the current /etc/init.d/boot.clock which is part of the package aaa_base. The reason I'm asking this: In the past, /etc/adjtime was just a "cache" with information how exact the hardware clock works, and it was a common recommendation to delete it after fixing the date/time with ntpdate to avoid too much drift. Now that /etc/adjtime is the only place that stores the former HWCLOCK setting, deleting it isn't a good idea - and that's why I'm asking if there should be a release notes entry about it. Proposed text, rough draft: /etc/adjtime now contains the information if your bios clock runs on UTC or in local timezone (previously stored in HWCLOCK in /etc/sysconfig/clock). Before 12.2 (that is 11.4 and 12.1) the valid location is /etc/sysconfig/clock with its variable HWCLOCK. The mkinitrd of 11.4 and 12.1 will handle /etc/sysconfig/clock whereas the mkinitrd of 12.2 and on will use /etc/adjtime. On 12.2 the /etc/adjtime will be always created if it does not exists in case of an update the %post scriptlet of package aaa_base will create the /etc/adjtime with the help of /etc/sysconfig/clock and then remove HWCLOCK from /etc/sysconfig/clock.
