I tried installing the documentation package from the Documentation project but the x64 version failed so I thought I would install the x86 version since the package is noarch anyway. This did not work: the manual did not show up in KDE help center, and besides, the package still contains documentation for version 11.4. 2. So I thought I would build the documentation myself from the tarball. I downloaded the tarball and installed susedoc. I have no idea how to apply susedoc to the tarball; neither susedoc nor the tarball contains any information in that regard. 3. So I thought I would report a bug at Berlios (as directed by the misplaced susedoc README), only to be told that I cannot because Berlios uses a self-signed certificate. I suggested a solution to the certificate problem to Berlios staff, and that is as much as I can do with Berlios. In other words, cubic SNAFU. Putting the Processor to Sleep (C-states)¶ Modern processors have several power saving modes called C-states. They reflect the capability of an idle processor to turn off unused components in order to save power. The operating system puts the processor to sleep whenever there is no activity. In this case, the operating system sends the CPU a halt command. There are three idle states: C1, C2, and C3. In the most economic state, C3, even the synchronization of the processor cache with the main memory is halted. Therefore, this state can only be applied if no other device modifies the contents of the main memory via bus master activity. Some drivers prevent the use of C3. The current state is displayed in /proc/acpi/processor/*/power. Or isn‘t it? Unfortunately with suse12.1 there came a new GNOME which is unuseable. There is no GNOME-panel as described at the above mentioned site. One doesn't find no possibility to configure shortcuts. Right-clicks don't open menus. (Windows have only a cross to close them in the upper right corner, no icon to maximize/minimize them.) It is OK to make something new. Maybe somebody likes it. It is not OK to abolish things, thousands of people worked many years productive with. I miss the possibility to decide, if I get a well known GNOME-desktop or the new one (which I don't like). (At the login i can chose session just GNOME - there should be alternative GNOME new desktop or GNOME old desktop!) This list appears to have vanished in 12.1RC1, requiring the operator to know the exact username they wish to log in as. This reduces user-friendliness and slows down login time. Either create multiple users in order to force KDE to display the login screen on startup or tell the system not to automatically log you in during the user-creation step during install. 3. I had a maximized gnome-terminal session open (running mc, browsing a file, if that matters), and when I hit shift-<left-mouse-button> to select some text, suddenly the X server forcibly exited. (I couldn't find a core dump.) Next thing I saw as the login screen again; then I did something a bit silly - namely reboot to update the running kernel, which overwrote the previous X.org.0.old logs, so I don't yet have logs of the incident. Nothing in /var/log/messages though.
