After that, for starting working with the new installation I do a complete system reboot to start with a clean system state. Each (really each) time after doing so, KDE is logging off, the OpenSUSE splash screen appears at the beginning of shutdown (I cancel this slash screen with <ESC>) and after a few seconds the system shutdown remains hanging forever, sometimes after writing out "Shutting down cron", at another time "Shutting down sshd" or other system services. The only way around this is resetting or switching off the hardware. Some hints: - I got the described problem on two totally different systems, one 32-bit with Pentium 4, and one 64-bit with a Dual Core processor. - I use the kernel from OpenSUSE's online update. - /var/log/messages does not contain any hint for a crash, it only doesn't log any longer from the hanging point - I use smb4k 0.10.1 (self-compiled in KDE 4.1.96) from within KDE 4.2 to mount some CIFS shares to my home directory, set to unmount them on KDE exit. But KDE is shut down normally, so I guess it's not a smb4k problem, with KDE 4.1 I can't remember a similar problem. I even don't know how to categorize this problem. Has anyone got some idea? Thanks Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Launch KDE 4.2 2. Start YaST2 "Software Management" 3. Choose All packages -> Update if newer version exist 4. Edit the installation summary to fit my needs 5. Launch YaST update 6. Choose Leave -> Shutdown or Restart from KDE Actual Results: KDE logs off, OpenSUSE shutdown splash screen appears, but system remains hanging during shutdown after a few seonds. To boot normal, i had to remove the entries from fstab.
