This is a NVidia GeForce 8200 based motherboard and the standard OpenSuSE 11.1 2.26.27.7-9-default kernel does not seem to have support for the SATA controller on this motherboard. It is possible to go into the motherboard BIOS and change the SATA mode from SATA to AHCI and back but I have tried both settings and the SATA controller never seems to be found. No hard drives attached to the on-board SATA ports are discovered. This happens very frequent, for example when reading a page on the site, carefully reading, then taking the mouse to scroll for example and it's lost. It takes about 15 seconds (estimated, not measured) and then the mouse 'jumps' a bit an it becomes working again. In /var/log/messages, the following lines appear: Dec 3 18:57:15 3120-2914 kernel: psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away. The only thing brought up when the X server starts up is a gray screen that fades out into a dark grey screen (pics coming in a few minutes). The framebuffer graphics in GRUB, the early bootsplash, and YaST installation do work, albeit not at the correct resolution (although that is more related to the resolution of my PC, so it's not part of the bug report). After some research, apparently the driver for this chipset wasn't released early enough to be included in openSUSE 11.0, and I'm not sure if it is scheduled to be included in openSUSE 11.1 (I'm also not sure exactly what drivers this card requires, BTW). I get this acute feeling of powerlessness, and deja-vu reading this. It is the moral equivalent of: **** Something went wrong !!! **** ;-) any chance the software could elaborate ? clearly it knows a lot that I don't but it would be nice if it could let on in at least a few ways: What repo / arch values would it accept ? [ presumably it knows the valid combinations by now ]. Why is my repo / arch not good enough ? [ surely this stuff is built in a chroot jail, that should work ~anywhere ? ]. Where do I go to find help on this ? the manual or build --help is not so helpful in this regard. After finish of install partition 5 was deleted and partition 4 was unusable. All data on /data were lost!!! Partitions 2 and 3 were not touched and are ok. Yast showed up that it would set partition 4 to type 83, but going back to prevent this was unsuccessful. Editing of partition 4 was not allowed because of "extended type"! Going forward lead into the same message that partition 4 will be set to type 83 and beside the other normal behavior partition 5 would be mounted on /data. While the installation process I recognized that partition 5 was lost and partition 4 was really set to 83, but was not more mountable. fsck.ext2 Message: "Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda4. Could this be a zero-length partition?"
