For example, if two kernels are installed, and both assign the name for the bootloader entry in the form of 'openSUSE 10.3 x.y-z', then selecting either will result in YaST allowing you to edit the latter in the list. This can also become a problem if an entry is manually changed to have the same name as another entry. Further, determining the default entry appears to be dependent on the name of the entry as well, so if the default entry has the same name as any other entries, YaST will display all entries with the same matching name as the default. Deleting any one of the entries with the same name as the true default entry will cause YaST to reassign the default entry. There is a rx220 available at Novell. Following items where tested : 1) Installation to a disk with already allocated and formatted (EXT3) partitions. 1a) Partition is formatted and empty - assignment of partition without format is not possible 1b) Assignment with format works - but openSUSE fails to format the partition system code : -3030 2) Installation on an empty disk, I just succeeded once doing this, all the other times I ended up with system code : -3030 And I have no idea, what was different at that time, when I succeeded with the start of the installation. 3) The only time when I succeeded installing openSUSE 10.3 alpha# ( #: > 4 ) the first boot failed, because none of the partitions was found ( partitionname /dev/mapper/pdc_......._part# ) 4) Please read also Bug 279837, Novell tells you during installation that incase of dmraid only a MBR can be written - in case of rhel5 or fedora there is also a bug, but grub is able to write a boot-record to the partition, how to do this is described in a gentoo howto, please read http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Gentoo_with_NVRAID_using_dmraid Installing GRUB Method 1 This method does not work on openSUSE Note: I suppose that you can reproduce the above describe problems on any RAID configuration supported by dmraid ( I did not all above decribed steps on a FSC Econel 100 S2, which has a ICH8R chipset with SATA Raid and LSI firmware ) Additional information : Please see also Bugzilla Entry 224219 at RedHat RHEL5 dmraid panic with isw metadata (ESB2/ICH8) Description of problem (224219) : A WS3990 configured with Intel dmraid1 will kernel panic if any of the drives are pulled the system will not boot regardless of which drive is pulled 0 or 1. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): kernel 2.6.18-1.3002.el5 x86_64 dmraid-1.0.0.rc13-2.el5 How reproducible: 100% Steps to Reproduce: 1. raid1 configured in the Intel raid bios. 2. Install RCS7 on a Dell WS390. 3. Remove any drive system kernel panics upon reboot. Hardware: 1. ASUS A7N8X (Atlon,nforce), DVD-ROM, DVD-recorder, one IDE HDD 2. Asrock K7S8X (Athlon,SIS), DVD-ROM, one IDE HDD. the first reboot during Installation failed the systems freezed. I tried many many bootoptions / Bios settings - no effect. Only when I tried boot-option "insmod=ide-generic" I had no more system failure and messages on tty 10 but also no automount. After changing the DVD-ROM drives to new ones from LG every thing was fine and very stable. Same effect with 10.3 / I never try 10.1 The DVD-ROM was a MSI type D16(MS-8216) and D16(MS8216S). PS: I think 50% of the bug's with DVD written here are the same problem. please correct this bug or make a remark in the release notes, cause it is very difficult to find this problem caused by a crummy IDE drive.
