It's an invaluable tool when performing system rescues and such, because it can do almost anything with files and sockets. It's sort of like netcat but it's vastly, vastly more powerful. If one has to transfer data (and since wget is not included either) socat would at least help that out. Please also include wget - if one *really* needs an RPM or some such, oftentimes what is included just won't work. In lieu of wget, curl would work just great, too. Last item - an editor - part of a rescue CD may include the necessity of editing files - nvi or some other very small vi-clone (maybe vim-tiny) would make that frequent task much less onerous. Perhaps even nano for those that prefer it.
