The only differences are that re-formatting media takes ~20s in growisofs and ~6s in k3b and of course the failure in k3b. Everithing else, including growisofs arguments and accessed files are the same. Unfortunately strace does not show the exact scsi commands and k3b does not log them either. IMHO a reason of the failure could be a timing issue or something else accesses the device in parallel. It would be nice to get a log of scsi commands from kernel. Unfortunately i don't know if it is possible with IDE devices. For scsi, sata and usb devices it can be enabled with echo -1 >/proc/sys/dev/scsi/logging_level. At startup xvkbd is started by xdm, and is not killed. So I have to su to root and kill it manually. The problem seems to be in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup on line 67 - 82 where xvkbd is started to be able to input username and password. I'm not good enough at scripting to fix it though.
