Previously, I was using KDE with SLES10 as my desktop. My home directory is centrally served so it's the same home dir all along. When I logged in (via gdm), I got the following message: "Do you wish to make kde.desktop the default for future sessions? Your preferred session type GNOME is not installed on this computer" The problem I have with that error message is that if I click on "Just log in", my GNOME session starts up fine. Since it starts up fine, it seems to exist. There must be some sort of bug lurking here when looking at the previous session data. Before logging in with gdm, I had removed .gnome* .gconf* and such to hopefully get a "fresh" gnome environment without cruft from previous attempts. I don't know tons about GNOME or X11 so if there is a file I should pass along, let me know. PS: If I choose 'Session' on the bottom of GDM and choose GNOME, then it asks me if I want to make GNOME the default. That's cool but it's even stranger that I get the misleading error message above when I just try to log in. When I tried to log in as myself using gnome, I got a window that stated: 'The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFID:GNOME_MixerApplet"' Looking at the .xession-errors (attached) several other applets failed as well. Perhaps we're missing a dependency of some sort? When firefox is started, it appears to work fine. Then I decided to change some preferences. I navigated: edit -> Preferences -> content (icon with the globe at the top) When I went to content, firefox become unresponsive. ** this is repeatable ** My desktop is gnome if it matters. It appears to work fine with 'main', 'tabs. 'Privacy' has a problem and I'll file it separately (but ok if it's duped). I connected gdb to the firefox pid: I'm not sure the details there are useful, but I'll attach what I have. For example I would like to "add repo", i.e. add address, but not "add repo" in meaning "download data from repo immediately". But anyway, without network (my case) this is one-way ticket. You cannot get back to turn this option off (bug), you can just look at your network cards, click next, wait for error, and see the dialog with network cards again. Error: RPM failed: ERROR: module /lib/security/pam_ck_connector.so is not installed. error: %post(ConsoleKit-0.2.1-41.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 ConsoleKit calls pam-config in it's postinstall script: /usr/sbin/pam-config --service login -a --ck_connector as far as I can read the code in pam-config will always fail on x86_64 because it checks for both, the 32bit and the 64bit pam plugin and in the postinstall you can never expect both of them to be installed already. and btw.
