I am trying out the 2.6.18 SUSE 10.2 alpha 5 (in order to get the 2.6.18 enhancement of priority inheritence mutexes) and I noticed that the context-switching latency for a real-time, FIFO, high-priority thread seems to be a lot higher than it used to be, at least when using a posix timer. Try this program out in both 10.1 and the 10.2 alpha 5 and you'll see what I mean. It basically starts a timer and checks the real-time clock. It differences the times in between timer timeouts and keeps running average and squared average. At the end it prints out the mean and standard deviation for the clock deltas. But when I switched on the machine at first time (after install), the system freezed and restarted itself. And it continues periodically until I switched off the computer. I haven't got any idea avout this problem, because the same happened with Fedora Core 4, but this problem disappeared in Fedora Core 5. SuSE Linux 10.0 works well, too... Standard install, standard boot. sometimes (not everytime, not everyday) the timer goes crazy. The users sees: > time sleep 1 this command takes an radmon time (between ~0.5 and 5 secs) and displays another random time. > key repeat problem with KDE User presses one key, programs receive multiple keys. If KDE Key Repeat Settings (kcontrol->keyboard) are turned off, this seems to be better. the Text Console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) has no key-repeat problem. > some random other strange problems Workaround: use the kernel parameter "clock=pit" and all seems to work fine. see also my posting in newsgroup alt.os.linux.suse: http://groups.google.de/group/alt.os.linux.suse/browse_frm/thread/ffec73fe3… since then, the kernel got updated at least once without fixing the problem. In particular, when the e1000 drivers are unloaded during power-down, they leave the NIC in a state that does not allow IPMI to continue working after shutdown is completed. The current e1000 drivers from Intel resolve these problems. Please refresh the e1000 drivers the next time you release a maintenance kernel.
