The reason is the incomplete (or broken) /sbin/path_id. line 360 in /sbin/path_id has this: if [ -L $full_sysfs_path/subsystem ]; then This does not trigger with SLES10 kernel, the correct code branch is taken. With a newer kernel, the broken branch is used and as a result, nothing is returned and the rule does not match. If the above 'subsystem' is changed to 'sUbsystem' to hard disable the branch, a 2.6.18 will again create value symlinks. Updating udev.rpm is of course not an option. If SLES10 were based in 10.0 instead of 10.1, it would mean that one can not use the SLES10 kernel anymore after the package update because udevstart is missing. I demand an udev.rpm update with a fixed path_id. This leeds to OOM and YaST2.call and the Xorg progrocess get killed by the kernel. I'm sure this worked better a few weeks ago. There used to be a 'dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=123 of=$disk' in the expert partitioner. This option in the pull down menu is not offered anymore.
