Bad font display in Mozilla
Does anyone else get bad font display in Mozilla/Galeon? I'm running SuSE 7.3, with Moz 0.9.6-9 (from SuSE ftp), Galeon 1.0.1 (built from src against SuSE dependencies), XFree86 4.1.0-45 (from SuSE ftp) and NVIDIA drivers 1.0-2313. I've had this problem with earlier version of XF86, Moz and NVIDIA drivers (I get it with the stock 7.3 DVD install). It's almost as though the X11 fonts are knackered and they're getting the size information wrong. Any ideas? This is really spoiling my browsing, I've even been booting into Windows to browse... yuk! I have a Matrox G400 card, and I am running X 4.1 from SuSE rpms. I compiled gnome/moz/galeon against clean sources d/ld from the various sites. I use galeon as my main browser and I do not have any font problems. If you want me to visit any particularly problematical urls and report back, just let me know. It's pretty much every site/URL I get this for!!! I've got a very similar setup at work, but a different graphics card and I can only run XF3.6 (for another reason). Works fine then. :( :( Jamie On Sun, 9 Dec 2001, Geoff wrote:

For some reason the fonts appear at irregular sizes, screwing things up. Anyway, by leaving my montior off when it goes to switch to runlevel 5, it makesthe fonts run as expected. I too experienced it working fine under XF3.6 but when I went to XF4.X, I started noticing this problem, I had hoped SuSE 7.2 would have fixed it but it appeared it hadn't. Hi Tim,
Reading a post of yours the other day, I got the impression that you had given
up on linux ... something about not booting very often in future .. maybe I
misunderstood. Anyway - good to see you again.
As to the question. I think that you are supposed to have the following as part

Oops, guess I wasn't clear there. I generally leave my Linux box running all the time; that's what I meant! :-) No, ever since I got Gnome compiled and everything (with tons of help from you), things have been hunky-dory.
As to the question. I think that you are supposed to have the following as part of your evironment :
MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/home/
However, I have got that and I don't think that it is sufficient. I arrived at my configure string by trial and error. I will quote it below, I don't have the faintest idea why it works :-0

Well, I spoke too soon. To start with, I don't have a directory called "mozilla" in my home directory. I installed mozilla under /usr/local, where I install everything that I build from source (Gnome, on your recommendation, being the only exception). I tried substituting the paths to the mozilla/bin, /include and /lib subdirectories both in the MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME equate and in the configure options to galeon, but it still complained that mozilla wasn't installed. And yes, I ran ldconfig after building mozilla. :-) Any other ideas? Based on what I've heard, I'd really like to try galeon, but it's pretty irritating that it isn't smart enough to find mozilla. -- Tim Kynerd Sundbyberg (småstan i storstan), Sweden tim@tram.nu Sunrise in Stockholm today: 8:37 Sunset in Stockholm today: 14:43 My rail transit photos at http://www.kynerd.nu

Just to make things worse before we (try to), make them better, I think that you will find it worthwhile to persevere with galeon. It is not perfect, but I find it a *lot* faster than moz and it has some wonderfully geeky options which actually increase usability. Anyway, turning to business, forgive me for being ultra-pedantic, but just to make sure that our systems are syncronised can you please confirm : (1) That your moz is 0.9.5 or higher. (2) That you have actually been able to run moz. (3) That you deleted your old config.cache and config.h before reconfiguring galeon, because I don't trust those files. (3) That your config string is (as I understand it) exactly as follows : configure --with-mozilla-home=/usr/local/mozilla/dist/bin --with-mozilla-includes=/usr/local/mozilla/dist/include --with-mozilla-libs=/usr/local/mozilla/dist/lib --with-gconf-exec-prefix=/etc/opt/gnome/gconf (4) That you have MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/local/mozilla/dist/bin/ Thanks, Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 0.9.6.

Been using *it* as my browser, actually, ever since I installed it.

I had not done this -- whoops! So I tried again.

Yep.
(4) That you have MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/local/mozilla/dist/bin/
Yep. No go. Galeon's ./configure can't seem to find mozilla. Are you sure I shouldn't have --with-mozilla-home=/usr/local/mozilla/dist (without /bin)? Or even just /usr/local/mozilla? Are you sure I shouldn't have --with-mozilla-home=/usr/local/mozilla/dist (without /bin)? Or even just /usr/local/mozilla? Just a thought.
Just in answer to this one point, I took my string from this part of the galeon INSTALL file : If configure can't find gtkmozembed.h or you can't link the program, instead of just ./configure type: ./configure --with-mozilla-includes=your_headers_directory --with-mozilla-libs=your_mozilla_bin_dir If you're using a fresh build of Mozilla, this should look something like: ./configure --with-mozilla-includes=your_mozilla_dir/dist/include --with-mozilla-libs=your_mozilla_dir/dist/lib --with-mozilla-home=your_mozilla_dir/dist/bin I have never tried it any other way. I don't have any further thoughts yet, but I am working on it now that I am confident our systems are synchronised. Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? OK .. next two diagnostic ideas. (1) I reconfigured and found that --with-gconf-exec-prefix=/etc/opt/gnome/gconf does not appear to be essential. Maybe leave it out for now, just to eliminate a variable? (2) There seem to be three stages of moz detection, I will give my outputs from each : (a) checking for gtk_moz_embed_get_type in -lgtkembedmoz... yes (b) checking for Mozilla... yes (c) checking Mozilla version... 0.9.5 At which of these stages does your configuration fail? Adding a third diagnostic thought, which version of galeon do you have? The configure script has some embedded references to moz version numbers. It might be worth your while to make sure that you are using galeon 1.0.1 to compile against moz 0.9.6 Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Here is an answer from someone on the galeon list - he is a regular and usually right : "Have him try using --with-mozilla-libs=/usr/local/mozilla/dist/bin "The name is counter-intuitive, but the Mozilla "libs" needed by Nautilus "and Galeon are in "bin". When you say, turn off antialiasing, what do you mean? I don't run KDE, I run Gnome. My understanding was that you must install gdkxft and then select the gdkxft theme to run Gnome apps anti aliased. I'm not doing this (but have gdkxft installed). I have used fetchmsttfonts to install the MS fonts. ??? Jamie -- Jamie O'Shaughnessy jamie.oshaughnessy@ntlworld.com
