Settings->Forwarding and POP/IMAP->IMAP access settings "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from th elast visible IMAP folder:" Select "Immediately delete the message forever" If you're using POP, switch to IMAP and use that option. There is an option in the settings to delete the copy after retrieved, but that may be what you're set to. POP as a protocol is far more primitive, and Google themselves recommend using IMAP if you have the option because it provides greater flexibility and functionality. Yes that is exactly what it means, as you would be able to determine by logging into your account with a web browser. Archived means the mail is in your ALL MAIL folder after delete. Carlos doesn't understand that this is something totally under the users control. And you can have it deleted permanently whether you are using pop or iMap. Me neither, at least not for this account. This is why I use several different Gmail accounts, rather than running everything through one. By setting Gmail to archive this account (The one I read Opensuse on) I can search back many years without resorting to the Mailing List Archives. What are the settings in your email progralm? With both Thunderbird and Seamonkey, under account settings, there's an option on what to do when you delete a message. I have been checking this. When using an email client and IMAP, moving a message out of the inbox to another folder, including trash, moved it immediately on the server. If then deleted from trash, it was then deleted from the trash folder on the server. Then go back to the Gmail settings page, disable imap, enable pop, set gmail to delete the gmail copy as soon as the mail is retrieved.

In thunderbird, change all the account settings to pop the mail, and you will be back to the way it was in 1998.

Except on testing - when deleting messages when using POP is to move them to trash, which then is purged 30 days later.

Let me just add - I tested this out myself using an openssl client connection (effectively telnetting to the pop3s port) and issued the commands: USER hendersj@gmail.com PASS mypassword RETR 1 And then checked the web interface. The behaviour is exactly what Duaine describes. I don't know (and am not in a position to test) if the DELE command does the same thing or not. I suspect it does.
