Or possibly use IMAP. From the information I read (and I'm sure someone will correct me if they think I'm wrong. ;) ), it appears that IMAP, when configured properly, is supposed to bypass the trash folder completely if you've configured gmail to do that. There are discrete options in the IMAP configuration on gmail for the option "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:" * Archive (default) * Move to trash * Immediately delete the message forever Given that the last two are spelled out as distinctly different, performing the immediate deletion would seem to bypass the trash folder, solving your problem. Since you're using Thunderbird, it can handle both POP and IMAP, so switch to using IMAP and you should be able to get what you want to happen. You can use Thunderbird's message filters to move messages from your gmail account to local folders, having the same effect as if you retrieved them using POP. Thus, if your filters are set up to move messages from the IMAP server to your local folders, then they don't exist in any of gmail's visible IMAP folders, and if you select "immediately delete the message forever," that should accomplish exactly what you're looking for - pulling messages from the gmail server and having them not show up in the inbox, "all messages" or in the trash - ie not counting against your gmail storage quota.
