[SLE] Network configuration help please :>)
Hi Everyone, I'm very much a novice with SuSE so I'd appreciate some help. I've installed the new 6.4 version but am having trouble setting up my network. I have the Linux machine on the same network as two Windows 98 machines and I can't seem to get them connnected. I also can't access the printer which is connected to one of the windows' machines. Any help would be appreciated and would you please keep it as simple as possible. Thanks :>) Ozgeek <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HEAD> <META content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" http-equiv=Content-Type> <META content="MSHTML 5.00.3013.2600" name=GENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=Arial><STRONG>Hi Everyone,</EM></STRONG></FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT face=Arial><STRONG> I'm very much a novice with SuSE so I'd appreciate some help. HI!!!!! IŽm not a guru in networking under Linux but I made a home network like yours 1 week ago. So to start, first you must install Samba on the linux machine (this is an SMB server, a layer of the TCP/IP protocol, which enables you to comunicate with the win98, 95 or NT). Second you could start reading the help of the Samba Server. Third you should try to configure it through Swat( a graphical setup utility for Samba) you can start it from your web brouser like this: in the direction bar write http://nameofthemachine:901/ Nameofthemachine you should replace it with the name of the machine where Samba is resident, 901 is the port where generally it is listening!!!! Any question donŽt hesitate in asking me. Hi Newbi! (novice) You need to locate a copy of samba and install it. It will connect your WinXX boxes to your SuSE... Install samba using Yast, then use SWAT to configure your smb.conf. on another note, you might want to connect your printer to the linux machine instead of the windoz box. I have a SuSE box running samba with 2 printers (HP DJ682C and JL1100) and doing file sharing with my wife's win98 machine and it works great. Jerry and June Kreps wrote:

Can we maybe get more details of what the problem actually is? Have you set up the net cards? Set up routing? And so on... Here's an outline of what you should be doing: 1. Get the network card installed and working. 2. Give all your computers an IP address on the same subnet (192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, etc.). 3. Set up routing correctly (although this should be done by ifconfig). 4. Try pinging around the network. That's basically what you should be doing, but more detail requires more info. from you... Chris -- Apologies to everyone who has been waiting for replies off me over the past few weeks - I've been away from my computer. I'll try to catch up with my email over the coming days, but don't be surprised if you get a reply in a month's time... __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
