You don't need any special software/driver. Just mount it like you would do with a normal CD. Ciao, Stefan -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

So a couple of weeks ago I sent the encl. message to the list. Getting no answer, I sent of to SuSE Install support, who responds that install support does not cover my tape drive because it is not required to get a "basic system up and running" !@#$ that, who is always saying to back up? (tech suppt is) And anyway the SuSE install cd does not even boot when the tape dr is hooked to the machine, which sounds like a suppt issue to me) SO I enclose my segfault one more time in the hopes that: a) someone will have an answer for me b) SuSE suppt will remove their heads from assorted orifices c) someone will have another site / list in mind that might help me out Find original mssg below. My only suggestion is to get the latest (or just simply another) kernel and compile it yourself. It may make a difference. Thanks- actually, I'd tried that. After much fuss I have managed to make the ide-scsi module work. I am assuming I'm taking a performance hit here but my tests thus far seem mostly posative (a few restore errors but nothing earth shattering). Does anyone recommend a better backup package (commercial is fine as long as it's less than US $100) than Taper. -mab On Sun, 1 Oct 2000, Chris Reeves wrote:

I agree. SuSE is hands down the best distro- IMHO, mostly due to ReiserFS / LVM suppt, usb and yast (which is mostly good). (just waiting ofr PPC reiser and LVM. C'mon, guys) I would have been satisfied with the inst. suppt if they'd just bothered to explain the core dump or tell me to use the ide-scsi module. Being entirely ignored was discouraging. My "basic hardware configuration" would not boot the SuSE cd. The manual- looking at 7.0, as my 6.4 manual is not handy- p520 says basic installation on a standalone machine is supported. If the install cd does not boot, that sounds pretty basic. As I have said, I did not expect an engineer to rewrite the driver. I expected to at least be told what the dump meant and be handed a work around. (like I found with ide-scsi.o) -mab On 1 Oct 2000, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Well, I for one consider the reply from Ben Rosenberg (a SuSE employee) to be incredibly arrogant. Right or wrong, you are a paying customer who doesn't feel that they received proper attention from SuSE support. Instead of nicely explaining that Appendix H defines what is covered Ben chose to mention "heads in orifices". I also had the brush off from SuSE support (they said they were too busy to fix susefax and sendfax in 6.4). While they weren't abusive with me I was just ignored afterward. For the first time in two years I will not be buying the latest release. Perhaps it's just me but I think SuSE has changed for the worst. Gerry Doris

I have been on the list and I am very greatful to Ben for all the help that he has given! But I do see the user perspective... the assumption is that since Ben has @suse.com in his email address, he is _representing_ SuSE on this list and his emails are a reflection of SuSE attitude. THIS IS WRONG. Ben is on his owntime and is making an effort outside of his work to help us. Ben, perhaps you should include a .sig that clarifies that you are not official SuSE support on the list, or perhaps use a different email address. Regards, Adi. Hi Ben... one simple question.... I have SuSE 6.4 and today receive 7.0 Update... I notice that the only differences between them are the manuals and the support ? I'm trying to install 7.0 as NEW (I mean I make new partitions, and format them) installation using expert mode. I finish successfully the installation but yast never ask me for the root's password ???? So when all the script's finish and ask to login as root I can't because I haven't put the root's password ? Is that a bug or what ?? Quick fix: Boot the resque system (see page 452 ff in the manual) mount your root partition on /mnt Give the command vi /mnt/etc/shadow The first line should look something like: root:lotWncSu7GZ.Y:11227:0:10000:::: Go to the word after root: give the command dw and then the command :wq! (Yes, the : must be there) Remove the CD and reboot. You can now log in as root without a password. Hope this is what you wanted. Regards Anders

I have the linksys router hooked to my dsl modem here. Right now i have the dmz port opened up pointing to my linux box. My isp had given me a static domain an I have a sudo/domain of malone.tyler.com with tyler.com being there domain. Can i setup a mail server on my end with out seting up dns an stuff like this. I know its better to have the dsl modem going into the linux box an running ip-masg to feed the net to the other boxes on my lan but for now this was what i had when i had cable modem, til i get time to figure out ip-masg. I thought i had come across a script on the net somewhere that wud help you setup ip-masg but for life of me can not find it now. thanks for the info jack -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Well, all that I can say is that the only problems that *I* had were wither caused by my own "unique" installations (using multiple physical HDs, wanting to use ReiserFS, and needing to retain one of the partitions) or by an on-going difficulty with getting my Epson Color Stylus 740 printer installed locally under Linux. Is it possible that you're having issues with a faulty hard disk? Or are you installing SuSE on only one partition on this HD, and dual-booting to Windows? At 04:17 PM 10/4/00, Linux News User wrote:

Ben Rosenberg started typing into the keyboard and wrote:
Well, I was not trying to be "abusive" or "brush" anyone off. I report a lot of bugs and help a lot of people on this list. I do it in my sparetime at home and I try to be a good advocate within SuSE for the complaints and concerns of the users on this list. I don't have to do such things. I am not required to be on this list or to help anyone on this list.
Well I was just forcing myself just to monitor the thread but I can not do it anymore without expressing my own thoughts. These are not related to support only but my understanding of the SuSE concept and I may be completely wrong in my way of thinking. Let me try to go over the points which I was forcing myself. 1) Where is the 7.0 iso 7.xyz iso I want ftp first then will buy. many people may have different perspectives on this issue. As I see it Suse is 100 % right to delay the ftp. They may want to make sure that all the problem areas are solved before they put the iso. As I understand it the ftp version is evaluation and if one has lot's of problems with the installation and needs to do lots of updates either to solve the security issues (which is IMHO not 100 % under control of Suse) or the second reason for the updates could be to resolve the problematic behaviors of the software /hardware issues. It you are evaluating something you would like to encounter problems as little as possible. I think this as a test drive for a car If there are lots of uncomfortable issues or malfunctioning engine problems I do not think I would be willing to buy the car even though the salesman says no problem we'll fix it. Consequently I think Suse is taking a similar approach and I would vote this on the customer satisfaction area. 2) Many times there are requests where is the new xyz package everyone has placed them at their ftp why doesn't do Suse do the same thing. Well I am not an expert on the security subject yet I would call this perfectionism. In my way of thinking Suse does not want to jeopardize the security of the clients working environment and makes sure everything is almost perfect before they do announce the availability. (there were lots of security warning mails flying and Suse has not updated all the packages which takes time I understand) 3) Support I apply the Murphy's law generally "if anything fails read the manual." If I may suggest Suse to put the Support explanation on the first page rather than the back maybe people would notice it earlier and do not start shouting earlier. I have used the support so far twice and on both occasions found the staff helpful in solving the problem. The same goes to the sales department also ,although I should mention, it took me forty-five minutes to make the sales to understand why I want a saturday UPS delivery in Germany ( she was trying to help me save money buy insisting to have it shipped the regular mail). Overall I am a very happy customer with Suse and will continue be as long as they keep producing the quality packaging of Linux. -- Togan Muftuoglu toganm@turk.net 100% MS FREE Absolutely no component of Microsoft was used in the generation or posting of this e-mail. Well, simply because some of these updates don't effect SuSE packages. It does depend on who put the package together. If the person compiling the code found a potential flaw and fixed it before it was packaged up and released then there is no reason for an update and you most likely won't see one. We check out packages when alerts come out and if they are effected..then we update them. This is how it is in *most* cases..we try to be up on all of it. -->Well I am not an expert on the security subject yet I would call this -->perfectionism. I guess it must be a cultural thing, but where I am in the UK, the way you
deal with mechanical defects on any goods is to have the supplier rreplace
the item, or refund the cost. You don't go to the manufacturer. Eventually
the supplier will return the defective goods to the manufacturer and receive
a credit for it.
I know it's not me that's suffering from faulty disks, and I get as wound up
and violent as the next person when something goes wrong with an
installation, but I don't actually think SuSE are being unreasonable in this
case.
