X.Org 6.8.2 w/ fglrx-8.8.25 GLU problems...
Greetings, I am having difficulties running applications that use the GLU library with fglrx-8.8.25 w/ hardware acceleration on X.Org 6.8.2 and SuSE 9.2 on an ATI Radeon 9600XT. Whenever I run an application that uses the GLU library the display will freeze and refuse to take any input from the mouse or keyboard; after this, the machine cannot be restarted without hitting the reset button (I have tried to ssh into the machine, su - and reboot). My running theory is that only some of the symbols in the GLU library are culprit as the application does not freeze at startup, but shortly thereafter (ie, blender runs fine until a menu is pressed; glxinfo runs with no problems). My hardware is a Pentium 3.4E w/ hyper threading on an ABIT IC7G Max II Advance w/ a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600XT running SuSE 9.2. The fglrx and X.Org 6.8.2 packages are the ones provided at ftp.suse.com. My system is configured as follows; (apologies in advance for the lengthy info): # uname -a Linux linux 2.6.8-24.11-smp #1 SMP Fri Jan 14 13:01:26 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux # rpm -q xorg-x11 When you installed fglrx did you force it? LDB Johnathan Gurley wrote:

Has anyone else run into similary problems? If so, did you find a solution? :) Thanks for your time!

Unfortunately, no :( I installed the packages per the instructions at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/ATI/suse92/i386/fglrx/8.8.25/README On Tue, 15 Feb 2005 17:27:09 -0500, Lawrence Bowie <thesource@ldb-jab.org> wrote:
When you installed fglrx did you force it?

Greetings,
I am having difficulties running applications that use the GLU library with fglrx-8.8.25 w/ hardware acceleration on X.Org 6.8.2 and SuSE 9.2 on an ATI Radeon 9600XT.
I have the same ATI card and SuSE configuration except with an Athlon x86_64 board and chip. I also have a problem with occasional frozen screens since I installed the fglrx-8.8.25 driver. Interestingly my mouse cursor will still move from side to side but nothing works and I end up resetting. I've been unable to find any specific cause except that it only occurs during periods of activity. If I find out anything else I'll let you know. Jeff
I kind of had this problem and found that it was my screen size. I had set it too high. I found this out in Xorg log files. Thanks, LDB Jeffrey Laramie wrote:

Hmmm. What did you see in the log that tipped you off? I'm not seeing anything obvious in my log. I'm using a NEC LCD that complains if I use anything except 1280 x 1024 so that's the setting I use. It worked fine when I ran 9.1 and the default SuSE driver. But I just had to have hardware acceleration so... Jeff
I just installed kernel 2.6.11 on my SuSE 9.2 box. Not because I like compiling kernels (my finger nails are short after that) but to get my new Audigy 2 Value sound card to work. But doing that broke fglrx. I tried reinstalling 8.8.25 but got compile errors. I then tried 8.10.19. The "make modules" step completed albeit with a lot of warnings. But the "make install" failed. Couldn't find "modules_add". But after replacing "modules_add" with "modules_install" in /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx/Makefile then also that step completed without fatal errors. But fglrx still doesn't work. I get "DRI initialization failed!" in the X log. lsmod does not show fglrx. So I tried modprobing it. And that failed. And dmesg says "fglrx: Unknown symbol remap_page_range". I googled for remap_page_range and it appears that that function has now been removed from the kernel and that remap_pfn_range is to be used instead and that that takes a little more than just a simple name change. But otherwise 2.6.11 works ok so far. I haven't come across any misbehaviors yet. And it is more responsive. Claus
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894 I would download the driver and compile against yor current kernel. That is what I do anyway. I am assuming you are using pristine kernel from kernel.org. LDB Claus Olesen wrote:

Thanks. I'll check it out. But I doubt it will work. Because the "remap_page_range" call was most likely not introduced by SuSE. Claus On Saturday 05 March 2005 15:21, Lawrence Bowie wrote:

Fixing the problem actually doesn't take much. It's only a matter of doing what's described on this page http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost.php?p=1333461186&postcount=27 Then OpenGL works again. Claus On Saturday 05 March 2005 15:50, Claus Olesen wrote:
