X.Org 6.8.2 RC2 RPMs for SuSE 9.2 available
Hi The X.Org Foundation is currently preparing a second maintenance release for version 6.8 of their implementation of the X Window System. The code is presently in the beta testing phase. SUSE will prepare update packages for the latest SUSE Linux version as soon as this release (6.8.2) becomes available. In our efforts to work closely with the X.Org Foundation to make their software even better we would like to invite those users of SUSE Linux who are interested in the X Window System to participate in this beta test. This will give the beta version of 6.8.2 a wider exposure, more testing and allow our users to identify and report problems on their hardware early so they may be fixed for the release. To simplify testing I've built X.Org 6.8.2 RC2 RPMs for SuSE 9.2 and uploaded them for download to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/Xorg/Xorg-X11R6.8.2-RC2/ * Installation instructions can be found in the README (also in this directory). * In case something goes wrong and you need to revert to the original X.Org 6.8.1 RPMs for SuSE 9.2, simply remove the new RPMs with rpm -e <pkg-name> --nodeps and install the old ones from your DVD/CDs with rpm -Uhv <pkg-name> again (RPMs are in /suse/<arch> on the DVD/CD). A package list is in the README. * Notes for testers: Various drivers, modules and other infrastructure got significant updates and need to be thoroughly tested by the community, including: - "radeon" video driver - "nv" (nvidia) video driver - ATI Rage128 video driver - Postscript print driver - Mesa (OpenGL) update to release 6.2 - libXpm security update (CAN-2004-0914) ... and many many other things... * The full changelog for the X11R6.8.x stable branch can be found under http://cvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/xc/ChangeLog?only_with_tag=XORG-6_8-branch&view=log * SuSE specific changes since RC1: - reintroduced xf86/xshared/xdevel/xfntscl Provides for SuSE <= 9.2 * Feedback can be discussed on this list as we don't have an open Bugzilla. Please don't contact me directly or thru the regular SUSE feedback channel. I'll try to discuss the feedback on this list. Please note that there won't be any installation or advanced support for these test packages. Should you experience any problems please refer to the above instructions how to revert back to the version of X that has been shipped with SUSE Linux. Please also note that if you download and install a test version we strongly recommend to update to the released version of 6.8.2 once it becomes available. Could you please provide the rpms for SuSE 9.1 as well? If that is not possible, are SRPMS available and if so, could you give me a 10 line mini-howto on anything special I might have to do to build from the sources? thanks, Osho On Thursday 13 January 2005 7:21 am, Stefan Dirsch wrote:

The SRPM is available in the sources subdirectory. For building see /usr/share/doc/packages/build/README in the build package. I neither tried to build it with 9.1 nor did I test the packages on SuSE 9.1. So if you run into any problems, you're on your own. I'm sorry. Stefan, I understand that you have to limit your effort. Osho, if you try this, will you report your results? As I have a nVidia 5200 FX graphics adapter with 128 MB RAM which I could not get to support dual heading, I would like to try the improved driver - maybe this one does it. (Now I use a Matrox 450 which worked immediately with SuSE 8.2 and 9.1, but it has only 32 MB RAM.) Regards, Jörg -- Joerg Bruehe mailto:joerg.bruehe@web.de

AFAIK the nv driver currently does *not* support any Dualhead boards (I doubt that it ever will). Therefore you'll need to switch to the nvidia driver. --> http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) I have tried the proprietary driver with both SuSE 8.2 and 9.1, and did not get it to work in either case. Also, I want to rotate one of the screens (TFT 15" landscape, TFT 19" portrait), and that feature is not even scheduled there. The mga driver coming with SuSE did dual-head immediately for the MGA 450, even in 8.2, so I will stick to this solution. When I got my font issues with Evolution sorted out :-\ , I will rotate the 19" TFT (it already worked in a test with 9.1). the Gainward NVidia FX 5200 is running on my systemd (DualMonitoring), with 9.1 - 9.2, you can configure with SaX2, the 5200 is in the database for Dualmonitoring (Update SaX2 on ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/SaX2/*) you have to delete first the original found config and mark the (DH) DualMode config. -- MfG / Regards Günther J. Thanks! This worked flawlessly on my IBM Thinkpad T42 (ATI Radeon Mobility 9600). Next step is testing the new ATI fglrx driver :) Does it make sense to enable any of the new extensions like XDamage or Composite? Does KDE make use of these already? Good to know. Good luck! :-)

XDamage is enabled by default. Composite is still experimental. If you want to run into problems with the fglrx driver, please enable Composite. ;-) I'm not sure if KDE already makes use of these, but you can play around with xcompmgr and transset. xcompmgr should already be shipped with 9.2.
