[opensuse-wiki] New Download Page
Hi, it's been a long time since you have last heard about the openSUSE.org redesigning efforts. Robert and I have been busy with it the last few weeks and we would like to present you the first milestone we have reached: a new and improved download page which will be hosted on download.opensuse.org: http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/download/ We got a lot of feedback from users who were confused by the existing download page, so we decided to use JavaScript to make the page interactive. For users having deactivated JavaScript the old download interface will still be present. Please let us know what you think about the page and if and where you see room for improvement. -- Thanks a lot Frank Frank Sundermeyer, Technical Writer, Documentation SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuernberg Tel: +49-911-74053-0, Fax: +49-911-7417755; http://www.opensuse.org/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) "Reality is always controlled by the people who are most insane" Dogbert --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Overall, I think it looks pretty good. The only thing that I would suggest is to make the media download link more prominent. At first look, I didn't realize that they were links. Either use a radio button for the different media types, and then a button which would then download the file, or just make them stand out a little more On 5/10/07, Frank Sundermeyer <fs@suse.de> wrote:

- it would be nice a CD icon which shows me that this is a download, like a CD with a big green arrow showing down (can't remember who else uses it, sourceforge?) - it would be nice if i could click on the icons - a small text "right click on the icons to save as" or whatever would be usefull (not behind every download, only at the end of the section) - i would add this to the 32bit section (at the end)."This version runs also on 64bit systems." - in the ppc section, why not name it? I like the general design a lot :) What I see as a usability problem is that the links to start the real download like "Installation DVD" looks like a small passive text, but not like something what you can click on. IMHO this should be really way more visible, maybe with some nice download grafic or DVD icon or something alike. -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nrnberg) email: adrian@suse.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

It's very nice. I have a few concerns, but I have no good suggestion on how to address them without confusing people. Maybe a button that shows "advanced" information - or perhaps a link to a different page. - there should be some kind of recommendation to use a download manager for http/ftp. - there should be some kind of explanation about md5sum - I fear the way it looks now people with support for 64bit will feel they must get the 64bit version. Which is likely to cause them a few problems they would not face if they installed the 32bit version. Just something to consider. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

It looks very cool! Especially when imaginatevly adding the CD/DVD icons :-)
- there should be some kind of recommendation to use a download manager for http/ftp.
I don't think that an explicit clue to that is necessary because * experienced people will use a download manager anyways if they want to * non-technical users will be confused by that * this adds another step to the download procedure and we wanted to keep it as simple as possible

Do we really need md5sums? The medias are checked during installation anyway.

Like what? Honestly if there are problems running 64bit stuff on a 64bit system then these problems should be reported and we should try to fix them. Good point about the media check, though everyone skips it. I just think broken isos is quite common. It could be nice to discretely inform people that they can actually check for that - and take some steps to reduce the risk (download manager/bittorrent). Maybe link to troubleshooting section is good enough.

Little things that are not really fixable by a distributor. - There are more x86-packages. - w32codecs don't work with 64bit players (I believe). Of course you can play almost everything with free codecs these days, but still.. - Java apps such as limewire or azureus tend to cause problems - tarballs compile more often without problems on 32bit I think, - biarch can cause some problems, people must remember to keep 32bit firefox to have working java webplugin. Stuff like that.. Just came up with another idea/suggestion: Could we perhaps recommend a media+method. I think it could be wise to gently push people towards bittorrent DVD download. - reduces risk of broken iso - reduces load on mirrors - no need for add-on cd/manual install of ipw-firmware, java, flash etc. - not many media changes during burning+installation. Of course this requires dvd-burner, good bandwidth and a bittorrent client. But I still think that we should recommend it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Good idea! It was already mentioned that the final download links are not visible enough. Just another idea: - add another chooser "select media" which offers "DVD" and "CDs" (or integrate this in the "download method" section) - move the links to a section named "download" This way you could also easily clarify the content of the DVD - simply offer the link to the DVD + the language Add-On CD.
For users having deactivated JavaScript the old download interface will still be present.
I don't really like the current <noscript> message You need JavaScript enabled to use the download selector. If you'd like to download directly (without JavaScript), please use the non-interactive download table.. Why don't you simply include the download table directly? (+ maybe a notice that it would be less confusing with JavaScript) Some things I miss, compared to the old download table: - the MD5SUMs - links to the repositories http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/*/ [1] - the footnotes from current http://download.opensuse.org Were they just forgotten or did you drop them intentionally? To sum up my proposal: * the "download method" selector should IMHO offer: - Standard (ftp or http) - CDs - Standard (ftp or http) - DVD - BitTorrent - Network installation * the "Choose a media type" section should be renamed to "Download" and only show the following links: - Standard - CDs: links to the 5 CDs + Add-On + language Add-On + MD5 - Standard - DVD: links to the 5 CDs + language Add-On + MD5 - BitTorrent: keep as is - or split it to DVD and CD also - Network installation: mini-CD (incl. MD5) and the 10.2/repo/* repos Regards, Christian Boltz [1] I would add them as separate download method "direct installation from the internet" or alike. And I would put the Network installation mini-CD into that category too. --

You have incorporated the feedback very well. It is now very similar to the Ubuntu page http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download The opensuse page is superior for a beginner in that the picks the mirror automatically. One thing that the Ubuntu page does, is that it doesn't link to the download directly but to to a "You're download should start shortly, if not, click here" type page. That gives the advantage that you get a second go at telling the downloader what to do next. ie how to burn the iso, where to get further help etc. I myself prefer the direct iso link, but it is probably "friendlier" to give the second page....it is always hard to design with the novice in mind... Looks really great; I think the changes work very well. A few thoughts: Is it not possible to have the 'Start-up guide' somewhere with openSUSE branding? I mean, it is one of the first documents a user would see, and this is openSUSE. I'm also wondering if users tend to notice the links on the left (genuinely, as in, I really don't know); what I've generally seen is that users tend to think of navigation bars as fairly static, and often don't expect them to change when being on different pages. Also, with regard to the retail DVD, should there be a link to it on that page? Not sure. Greetings Sigi
Section 5b) Has few words that need explanation to average computer users: boot = Start computer; Turn computer on. media = CD or DVD Boot from media = "Start computer with CD1 or DVD in a CD/DVD drive. If you see that Windows starts look at < here 2 links to opensuse.org mentioned after section 5c)>" Or even simpler: "Boot from media. For more information look at < two links> The sentence: "In case that your computer does not automatically boot from CD/DVD, open the BIOS setup to allow booting from CD or DVD." covers only one case that is not common today. All computers that I have seen in last few years check first for bootable CD or DVD. Christian mentioned that Network Installation with MiniCD can only make trouble. It is for experienced users and I would skip any reference except as download option and remark that is for experienced users. -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

As another small issue, just before I forget: for the 10.2 release at least, base CDs 4-5 should be under "Optional" as I don't think we can class them as "needed" for any default installation. The page looks much better already, but there's still room for some improvement ;-)
* clickable icons in front of the download links - Sigh, is this really necessary? It's a pain to implement it in proper HTML (avoiding tables) for all browsers
IMHO download icons improve the usability of the page a lot! So: yes, this _is_ really necesary ;-) (and, naive question: what's wrong with float:left?)
* there should be some kind of explanation about md5sum Too confusing for beginners, especially from the Windows world.
It's more confusing to have broken installation media... I agree that the MD5SUM doesn't need a very prominent place, but it should be available somewhere[tm].
* links to the repositories http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/*/ - see link "Package Repositories" in the left navigation
That's too hidden IMHO. Please add a Media Type "Network Installation" with - the link to the Mini CD - links to the main and non-oss repository You can then completely remove the "Network Installation" column from the "CD" media type. (The Mini-CD is a bit confusing there ;-)
* the footnotes from current http://download.opensuse.org - I do not think this is the right place to tell people about the differences between the media. I would be happy to link to an appropriate article on the wiki...
Can we have something between the two extremes? I'm thinking of a "Help"-Link which opens a small info dialog (JavaScript). Anyway, the only relevant footnote / info dialog would be the list of languages contained on the language add-on CD. While we are at it, as already written in my previous mail: Please add the link to the language Add-On CD if people choose to download the DVD. Otherwise DVD users will never see the language add-on. Another thing, very minor: The explanation of the computer types is enclosed in parenthesis. Please remove them, they are superfluous. Oh, and all "Help" links should open in a new window.
* should be nice to have text in variables to keep the same page through i18n - I haven't thought about maintaining the page, yet...
;-) BTW: The download page just discovered a minor Konqueror bug ;-) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=275767 Regards, Christian Boltz -- Regeln sind da um denn kleinen Mensch zu baendigen... Looks good.
* Orange colour: - open issue, though I am not sure it will change ;)
Please, not orange! I need Green!-)

I personally don't think it is worth even a little bit of trouble and/or cross-platform problems. Heck, get rid of them entirely.
* a small text "right click on the icons to save as" - Why? A left click downloads the file ...
Sometimes that doesn't work. I see the latest version has the right click option. I would give both - "Left click to download or right click and choose Save As..."
* there should be some kind of explanation about md5sum Too confusing for beginners, especially from the Windows world.
I agree, especially as it makes keeping the web page up to date a little more work. My only major complaint is the light grey text (FF 2.0.0.2, openSUSE 10.2). It's just barely readable on top of the white background. I'd make it a tad darker. -- Jonathan Arnold (mailto:jdarnold@buddydog.org) Daemon Dancing in the Dark, an Open OS weblog: http://freebsd.amazingdev.com/blog/ UNIX is user-friendly. I think it's good to be able to easily differentiate between big parts of the site (i.e. Build Service, Download Area, and Documentation/Wiki), and doing it with colour like this is the most obvious way (the main area of the site is still green). Yeah, you're probably right. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing it still be green, but with orange highlights. -- Jonathan Arnold http://www.buddydog.org The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse: You cannot post "Thou shalt not steal," "Thou shalt not commit adultery," and "Thou shalt not lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges, and politicians.
