[opensuse] Icons bleeding from E17 to KDE3.5
Hi, I installed Enlightenment E17 on my laptop (Toshiba Sattelite U505-S2950) which already had KDE 3.5 installed as the default desktop. There are numerous icons splattered on the E17 desktop for various logical partitions which I didn't install, they come installed by default with E17. They are a bit of a nuisance on that desktop, but what is worse, they show up on my KDE 3.5 desktop when I open it up after using the E17 Desktop Environment. Anybody know how to get rid of them, or alternatively how to move them somewhere where they can be safely out of the way on E17 and won't show up in KDE3.5? I don't know how to reconfigure E17, but you can tell KDE 3 or 4 to use a different folder for its Desktop entries in the Paths module in kcontrol (4: systemsettings), and move the relevant .desktop files from ~/Desktop to the new folder. Hi, I haven't had too much time to work on this after your post, but I did remove the icons from the E17 desktop suggested. Even so, they still show up when I log back into kde 3.5 I found that there is another issue that has kept me from moving the desktop settings for kde 3.5 to another folder in the path as you have suggested. For whatever reason, if I boot the laptop from off to the E17 desktop, the cooling fan doesn't start. Then the cpu temperature goes up to about 73 degrees. If I boot the laptop from off to kde 3.5 desktop, the fan runs normally, starting somewhere around cpu temp 45-50 degrees. It runs continuously after that, keeping the cpu temp around 40 degrees. If I log out after booting into kde 3.5 and log into E17, then the fan runs with the kde settings and keeps the laptop and cpu cool. I am hesitant to change the path of the kde .desktop settings unless someone can figure out what to do about the fan issue. I don't want to burn up the machine! I don't think changing the path of the items you see in the desktop background will affect whatever breaks the fan control. I have 0 clue about fan control on anything other than my Thinkpad X60 though so use your judgement and others' advice. It would appear that on Aug 27, Mark Misulich did say:

Well it looks like Will already told you how to get them out of kde's
desktop... But you said you found them a nuisance in E17 as well.
I'm a multi-boot/multi-desktop user. And I spend most of my 'puter time in
E17. Every time I set-up my personal user settings to a new E17 install,
one of the first things I do is to get rid of those icons...
Open the "Settings" configuration panel from E17's menu. move horizontally
to the "Files" icon, then select "File Manager" (NOT "File Icons" BTW).
Once the "Fileman Settings" panel opens scroll sideways to "Behavior".
There you should find a checkbox for "Show Desktop Icons".
Mind you, I myself don't like _any_ desktop icons. So I've never tried to
find a way to zap only those annoying device icons while preserving any
'desirable ones'. So I don't know how that would workout. But I suppose
you could identify and delete the offending symlinks in ~/Desktop instead
of unchecking the "Show Desktop Icons" setting. But I think E17 would
recreate them on next startup or restart... Which would leave you with
the option of putting something like this in a personal ~/bin/script
rm ~/Desktop/\|storage_serial*.desktop
And calling it right after every E17 start/restart.
--OR--
Making sure that all the icons you want already exist. Delete the rest of
the *.desktop files. And set ~/Desktop to read only (chmod 555 ~/Desktop)
to prevent E17 from recreating the undesirable ones...
The drawback to making ~/Desktop read only is of course that you need to
re-enable write permissions to it before you can add any new desirable
icons (if any).
Hope this helps!
