It would appear that on Aug 27, Mark Misulich did say:
There are numerous icons splattered on the E17 desktop for various logical partitions which I didn't install, they come installed by default with E17. They are a bit of a nuisance on that desktop, but what is worse, they show up on my KDE 3.5 desktop when I open it up after using the E17 Desktop Environment.
Anybody know how to get rid of them, or alternatively how to move them somewhere where they can be safely out of the way on E17 and won't show up in KDE3.5?
Well it looks like Will already told you how to get them out of kde's
desktop... But you said you found them a nuisance in E17 as well.
I'm a multi-boot/multi-desktop user. And I spend most of my 'puter time in
E17. Every time I set-up my personal user settings to a new E17 install,
one of the first things I do is to get rid of those icons...
Open the "Settings" configuration panel from E17's menu. move horizontally
to the "Files" icon, then select "File Manager" (NOT "File Icons" BTW).
Once the "Fileman Settings" panel opens scroll sideways to "Behavior".
There you should find a checkbox for "Show Desktop Icons".
Mind you, I myself don't like _any_ desktop icons. So I've never tried to
find a way to zap only those annoying device icons while preserving any
'desirable ones'. So I don't know how that would workout. But I suppose
you could identify and delete the offending symlinks in ~/Desktop instead
of unchecking the "Show Desktop Icons" setting. But I think E17 would
recreate them on next startup or restart... Which would leave you with
the option of putting something like this in a personal ~/bin/script
rm ~/Desktop/\|storage_serial*.desktop
And calling it right after every E17 start/restart.
--OR--
Making sure that all the icons you want already exist. Delete the rest of
the *.desktop files. And set ~/Desktop to read only (chmod 555 ~/Desktop)
to prevent E17 from recreating the undesirable ones...
The drawback to making ~/Desktop read only is of course that you need to
re-enable write permissions to it before you can add any new desirable
icons (if any).
Hope this helps!
