Problems using VMWare with USB ports
Hello everyone! I just bought a webcam Genius. I have Linux Suse 9.1 and VMWare 5.5. Recently I installed Windows XP under VMWare and I try to use my webcan but I can't. I have the same problem with a Printer and I read that this is a problem with USB ports but I suppose that exist a solution for this problem... Someone can help me? Thanks in advance

You may have to do rmmod sn9c102 so that VMWare can gain control of the USB port. I'm using SUSE 9.3 and VMWare 5.5, so it may be similar for you. HTH. Regards. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

That is the module that gets loaded with my Genius webcam. Maybe yours is a different model. Mine is a VideoCAM NB. Also, make sure you run the command as root and that the webcam is recognized by Linux. Regards. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler
I have a printing problem with no diagnostic messages and no clue where to look fot help: The system is a dual boot SuSE 9.3/10.0 x86-64, updated to the latest version thru YOU. Connected at a USB port is an HP Photosmart 7350 printer, properly recognized and installed in both 9.3 and 10.0, also properly seen and installed (through samba) by other computers in the small home network, as well as virtual machines running thru vmaware (4.52 and 5.5) installed in both the 9.3 and the 10.0 sides of the system! The problem is that whenever a printing job is started from a network machine or a vmware virtual machine, only half the job is completed. At some point near the halfway point the printer stops, the printer que shows "processing", print manager shows a healthy printer "accepting jobs". No error logs show up because the system shows "normal". I have tried to find info on unfinished printing jobs in both samba and cups, but all the searches just show too much irrelevant information. I suspect that the problem is on the cups side, as once in a while the printing job will hang when printing from within linux, but that is a rare occurence, when going thru samba it happens every time. Any help will be appreciated. d.

I don't see any problem here with 10.0 and 5.5. In VMWare, go to the "VM" menu>>Removable Devices>>USB Devices and check the one you want to use. 5.5 automatically connects the device and unloads modules from the Linux Host. Going back to its use in Linux is a whole other issue. You may have to unplug and replug it. But, you run the risk of loosing your USB mouse, which has happened to me several times. Now, I either use a USB device in Linux or in VMWare, but not in both, interchangeably. Ed Harrison, Registered Linux User #199533 SuSE 10.0, Kernel 2.6.13 PolarBar Mailer 1.26

I get the message: ********* Message ************* A USB device is about to be unplugged from the host and connected to this virtual machine. It will first be stopped to enable safe removal. With some devices, the host may display the message "The device can now safely be removed." *********** End ***************

But, straight after the previous message, when I try to use the usb device like my mobile as usb with VMWare, it then issues the message: ********* Message ************* The specified device appears to be claimed by another driver (cdc_acm) on the host operating system which means that the device may be in use. VMware Workstation cannot safely take control of the device until the host driver is unloaded. ********* End ***************** If I unload the cdc_acm, I suspect that I will loose all usb devices like my mouse as you did. Fortunately, unloading is blocked because the device is busy (with mouse I presume).
Now, I either use a USB device in Linux or in VMWare, but not in both, interchangeably.
How do you get to use it interchangeably when the cdc_acm is loaded? :-) Al

The short idea is that I have no idea. I have never used a mobile phone in Linux or VMWare. In googling cdc_acm, I find that it is the module for usb modems. Is that how you wish to use it in VMware? If it is connected in linux and the vmware networking is properly set up, wouldn't it still provide connectivity to the VM? It is so for anything that can act as a 'usb stick'.

It seems to control all usb connectivity, which is all that is needed I presume. It actually is there in the VM 'removable Devices' -> 'USB Devices'. When activating it, the error messages appear.

Jea, it's there but mouths when I want to use it. In Linux I can place data files and delete others on it's usb storage part. The software for the devices, like the mobile, has special programmes not available for Linux; the reason why I need VMWare to connect. :-) Al
