I just setup a ddns service with dyndns.org. My smc router is supposed to be able to update my IP address with dyndns but they don't think it will. Dyndns.org suggests using a Linux client for IP updates. Can anyone recommend an easy-to-use, idiot-proof client? You don't mention which version of linux you are using. SuSE 9.1 comes with a couple of clients that will do the updates. I am using ddclient which works well enough. There is/was a page on their site that listed all of the clients that worked with a link to the download site. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2) * PLEASE only reply to the list *

I use updated-2.0 that I found on the dyndns site. It's been working fine for me, but I have dialup and it may not be suited for other connection types. -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. I have 9.1. I checked the DVD and couldn't find anything relating to ddns. Maybe I checked wrong. What are you using? I tried a couple from their site but wasn't smart enough to figure out what I needed to change. -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems, Inc. 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com
Is it easy to use? I'm an idiot so I need idiot-proof programs. Tom On Wednesday 11 August 2004 9:57 am, Jim Sabatke wrote:

My 9.1 distribution lists these packages: - ddt DDT is short for Dynamic Dns Tools. The goal of the project is to provide an open and free (in the GPL-sense) set of tools that will permit the deployment of secure and reliable dynamic DNS services. It uses BIND's dynamic update capabilities to provide authenticated updates. There are three parts to Dynamic DNS Tools: the DDT client daemon, ddtcd, and the actual client, ddtc; the DDT server daemon, ddtd, and the admin utility, ddt-admin; and the CGI scripts used for web-based account registration and administration. Homepage of the project: http://www.ddts.net/ - ddt-client This is a client for DDT (Dynamic DNS Tools) servers. It can be used to update an DNS entry of a host, that in fact has a dynamic IP address, in a secure fashion. The communication between clients and server is encrypted and authenticated, and the server uses the dynamic DNS update capabilities of BIND. Homepage of the project: http://www.ddts.org/ - ddclient DDclient is a small full featured client requiring only Perl. Supported features include: operating as a daemon, manual and automatic updates, static and dynamic updates, optimized updates for multiple addresses, MX, wildcards, abuse avoidance, retrying failed updates, and sending update status to syslog and through e-mail. This release may now obtain your IP address from any interface, web based IP detection, many router with user configurable FW definitions and now provides Full support for DynDNS.org's NIC2 protocol. Support is also included for other dynamic DNS services. Comes with sample scripts for use with DHCP, PPP, and cron. Randall Schulz

Possibly because if you use the YaST Installer's search function with the string "ddns" you don't get anything! You have to try "softer."
I'll give them a shot tonight. -- Tom Nielsen
