[opensuse] UUGH! New MozillaFirefox-3.0-1.1 adds tons of crap to your bookmarks.
Listmates: I hate it when any browser company thinks they know what I want in my bookmarks more than I do. The new firefox add reams of crap to your bookmarks plus new "Bookmarks Toolbar" you can't delete from "organize bookmarks". Shame on you Mozilla. Now I have to go figure out where to delete that obtrusive toolbar. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. You're talking about Firefox here, right? This is the answer here either way, minus the Opera advertisement. Worst browser interface on earth... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Seamonkey has done that too, except they didn't prohibit the removal of their default links. The new bookmarks and location bar is brilliant once you realize how it works. I love it.. absolutely hate using the old one now. I had no problems sorting things the way I wanted... Most Visited gets used a lot (I also find it pretty useful). C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Something not quite right here, David, because you can remove the Bookmarks Toolbar by removing it within the View option, and you can remove any bookmark by opening Bookmarks (NOT Manage Bookmarks) and Delete it by right-clicking on the name and then Delete. Oh no Basil, that's the way it "used to" work. No unchecking the toolbar only removes it duplication as a "toolbar" of menus under your normal menu bar. But that is where the fun starts... I emptied all of the garbage from the two new obtrusive bars and I was able to delete one of them, but then you find the "grayed out" delete option for the toolbar submenu confirming it cannot be deleted. No problem, I'll just go into bookmarks.html and do it there -- Nope the abusive toolbars aren't in there, but there is a new xml part of the bookmark scheme that looks like a likely culprit. Don't know what "process the bookmarks through bk2site" means, but http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/ might now be relevant to that task and/or other "bookmark" tweaks. FWIW, if you also use SeaMonkey and use only it for adding new bookmarks, you can periodically delete places.sqlite and copy your latest SM bookmarks.html file to your FF profile (with FF closed). On next FF startup it will import bookmarks.html into a new places.sqlite. -- "Where were you when I laid the earth's foudation?" Matthew 7:12 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. I wonder what in the heck was wrong with the good old bookmarks.html storage? What of the old mantra, "If it's not broken DON'T fix it?" I am sure the reason has to do with being able to inject more ads by making it more difficult to remove the stuff that will no doubt be forced on you through a bookmark folder that is guaranteed to be in every ff browser. Pity. Secondly, why not at least provide an option to keep the bookmarks in html or sqlite? I guess sqlite has benefits for users/organizations with 1000's of bookmarks. I doubt seriously there is any performance benefit for users with 20-50 bookmarks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. i'm sure there can be found plenty of reasons why to use SQLite against a flat HTML file. Like the auotmatic 'search' in it whenever you type something in the address bar. It will try to 'guess' what of your last visited and/or bookmarked sites you might want to visit. Try to implement something like this in a flat plain text file without good search capabilities. And there are plenty of tools out there to open/read/modify a SQLite database directly.. it's not, that the format is not well known and documented. Stop FUD please! For those of you who think change is bad: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227 The new location bar and bookmarks are fine - and this is coming from someone who has been accused in the past of being a Luddite... they work, and once you stop thinking change is bad and look at how it works, it turns out to be a pretty good change in how the location bar and bookmarks work. For the rest of us, the one click bookmarking is a godsend, and being able to quickly and easily search for previously visited sites by typing a couple of character or by tagging our fav sites with keywords is a major step forward in usability. Of you don't like it.. use FireFox 2. No one is forcing you to use 3.0. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Don't know what "process the bookmarks through bk2site" means, but http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/ might now be relevant to that task and/or other "bookmark" tweaks. Nice to know about sqlitebrowser, but it's no replacement for bk2site. The latter parses your bookmarks.html file and generates a small, yahoo-like searchable website from it (excluding those entries that you've flagged "private"). It's ideal to publish your huge bookmark
collection on a department intranet.

Importing is automatic in FF3 when a bookmarks.html exists and no places.sqlite exists.
Exactly what I mean, I have backups of bookmarks stored in ~/boxes/machine_name/userdata. FF automatically creates backups in: ~/.mozilla/firefox/vx395nd87.default/bookmarkbackups FF had messed up the arrangement of bookmarks with the 3.0 install. So I deleted places.sqlite to force a rebuild so I could import a fresh copy of /boxes/machine_name/userdata/bookmarks.html. To my surprise, FF automatically populated places.sqlite with information from ~/.mozilla/firefox/vx395nd87.default/bookmarkbackups/bookmarks-date.html. So, my point was if you want to dump the places.sqlite created by FF on install of FF 3.0, don't forget to remove all old bookmark*.html files in the FF directory or FF will automatically import those into places.sqlite thus leaving you with the same problem you originally sought to correct. Lastly, if you have bookmarks that you want to import using "Organize Bookmarks", make sure there are not duplicates in what you want to import. FF does no checking for duplicates. -- David C. Hello, You are right, and now I'm able to share my bookmarks between linux and vista. I made a symbolic link between my linux "bookmarks.html" and the vista one and with the browser URL about:config I modified two entries : browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML true browser.places.importBookmarksHTML true so that, while opening Firefox the former modifications are imported to places.sqlite and while leaving Firefox, the current modifications are exported to bookmarks .html and I share the modifications between the two operating systems.
