[opensuse] USB completely dead after the latest kernel upgrade
I used to have USB working on my 10.3 - my USB stick worked just fine, and USB camera had some problems, but could be make to work. After the latest kernel upgrade they stopped working altogether - i.e. they are not detected at all. When I plug in the USB stick, the light does not light. When I plug in a camera, it appears that it's trying to connect (lights flash), but in the end nothing happens. No messages appear in /var/log/messages. In fact, looking in /proc, /proc/dev/usb does not even exist at all! There seem to be a lot of messages related to usb failure in boot.msg (below), but I am not sure what they mean, apart from the fact that something is not loading, obviously, since everyting seems to be unknown. This looks like you didn't upgrade your kernel package properly, or you are running a kernel that you built yourself. What specific kernel package are you running here? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Latest SuSE default kernel, as installed by a recent YaST online
update. I haven't compiled my own kernels in 3 years or so now - and I
haven't tried to interfere with this one, or change any settings.
Everything else in the system is fully updated, too.

That's really wierd. Have you rebooted since you updated the latest kernel package? If so, can you check the validity of the kernel package: rpm -V kernel-default thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Oops - just saw this. rpm -V kernel-default shows no errors. I am
happy to check other things if you can suggest them - but would you
prefer me to do this on this list, private mail or on bugzilla - all
the same for me, really?

"Bugzilla is fine???" Sorry, but Bugzilla, JIRA and every similar piece of web-based bug-reporting, issue-tracking other management support software I've ever encountered is crap. Using them is like a trip to the dentist. Too bad no one's using all the fancy AJAX techniques applied to Flickr, GMail, MySpace etc. to make the software needed by developers and their users more usable.

For tracking issues and making sure they are resolved, yes.

Bugzilla is open source, feel free to modify it this way if you wish. good luck, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No it is not. Because if I'm not completely wrong, then 75% of Suse users do not use Bugzilla. IMO it's far too inconvenient.

Don't play artificially an ignorant. It doesn't suits you. It'd be like telling you to build your own car without care whether you an car engineer or not. - -- All the best, Peter J.
