Oops - just saw this. rpm -V kernel-default shows no errors. I am
happy to check other things if you can suggest them - but would you
prefer me to do this on this list, private mail or on bugzilla - all
the same for me, really?

That's really wierd. Have you rebooted since you updated the latest kernel package?
If so, can you check the validity of the kernel package: rpm -V kernel-default
