Is anyone else experiencing problems downloading from the apt-get repositories? Both gwdg.de and mathematik.uni seem to have been faulty most of today. Broadband download speeds from either repository have only been a few thousand Kb/s dropping down to a few hundred. (Worse that when I was on dial-up!). They have downloaded for a few seconds and then there have been periods of about 30 seconds with no activity. It's taken a long time to download anything - even of just a few Mb! Now I can't download anything. Whenever I try, I get an "unknown signature" error message and *nothing* will download. Even trying to install the various rpm signatures gives me the "unknown signature" message and they won't download. I have deselected the "check signature" in synaptic, but it makes no difference. Is anyone else experiencing this, or must it be a large problem here? It's the first time this has happened. Thanks Keith

Thanks for your reply. I ought to have added that apt-get update hasn't been too bad for speed, it's the downloading of the packages which has been the problem. Keith

Problems are worse today! I can't even connect to either repository. I have been trying all morning, and have even uninstalled apt & synaptic and reinstalled them - just in case they had got corrupted. There are no problems connecting to other sites and downloading at a good speed (not using apt/synaptic). As no one else has replied apart from Sunny, I assume that it is only me who has this trouble. Cheers Keith

Same situation here, but it's hardly a big deal. Maybe there are engineering works in progress or whatever. I'm sure it will come back good in a day or two. Of course, as we are both in the UK there could be a more sinister explanation - John Prescott sat on the fibre, staff at the Docklands exchange have been placed under house arrest for reading Viz on the job, whatever. :) Fish

Thanks, Mark. Sorry you are having problems, but it's gratifying to know that it isn't only me. Proves (I hope) that it's not something wrong here but is external. Strange that, of all the sites I have used during the past two days, it's just those two sites (gwdg and mathematik) which appear to be affected. I'll see what happens over the course of the next couple of days. Cheers Keith

gwdg is carrying a big load continuesly. Right now it has 230-we have 1131 users (max 8192) logged in in your class at the moment. And that is only. Besides ftp connections there are 500 http and 300 rsync connections simulteanously. It all ends up at the same disk array and although the disk caches are already bug, so many users still slow down the system. It would be nice if you could arrange some mirrors for the apt repository to share the burden :) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Hello Richard. I understand the Mathematik and GWDG loading is slowing things down considerably. However, it is the other part of my apt/synaptic problem which is bugging me. Headings are fine, but I can't download any packages from either repository. Anything I try to download fails with an "unknown signature" error message. I have even tried to download the rpmkey files (in case that was what was causing the problem), but they failed with the same error message. I have tried deselecting "verify packages signatures" in synaptic, but it makes no difference. I have tried downloading just your rpmkey file - same error, and also I have tried downloading one of your packages (gdome) but that fails also with the error message. So, I went to the GWDG site and manually downloaded both your rpmkey and gdome on to my hard drive. Using Konqueror/YasT they have installed without any problems. So it is just apt which is the problem. I have been using the apt/synaptic combination for years, without any problems. But it has suddenly gone faulty for some unknown reason. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled them, in case they had got corrupt. Still no luck. As a last resort, I may try installing SUSE on a spare hard drive and see if it is the same with a new installation. Apart from this, I can't think what else to try. Cheers Keith

Edit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/gpg-checker.conf and change "true" to "false" That may solve your problem although, quite why the problem should suddenly appear is a mystery. HTH David

It's not a solution, it's a workaround.
Oh dear! I don't like workarounds. That means the underlying problem is still there. I wonder what it could be and why it apparently happened all on its own? The only thing I did just before it started, was to download and install all of a YaST upgrade via Synaptic. I wonder if that could, somehow, have caused it? Tomorrow, I think I will do another installation of SUSE on my spare hard drive, install apt/synaptic and see how that is. Keith
Thanks to all who replied to my posting about abnormally slow download speeds and frequent long pauses when using either gwdg or mathematik, and not being able to download anything because of "unknown signature" error messages. I have spent several (no, many) frustrating hours today trying to get apt/synaptic working properly. In spite of installing the rpmsig files following Richard's command line suggestion of using the --no-checksig --no-postinstall options, things got worse, with more and more problems occurring! I read all the archive postings on the subject as well. So I decided the only thing to try, was to "Do a Windows". I uninstalled them! Then I reinstalled them and installed the rpmsigs again, using Richard's suggestion. They are now working normally and I can download from the repositories with no problems. Thanks again for all the help. Cheers Keith

Be sure to note that, while the _reinstall_ appears to have alleviated your discomfort, restoring the default configuration files more than likely effected your solution. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

yes of course ;) Even if the rpmkeys are signed you still do not have the rpmkey registered... You need to use 'apt --no-checksig --no-post install rpmkey.....' --no-checksig prevents signature checking and well no postscript is necessary in this case.

But konqueror and yast do _not_ the rpmkey delivered by rpm! Apt has the code to do that. Remove the rpmkey and have it install with apt mentioned apt. In this case you can specify the downloaded rpmkey file saved on your harddisk: apt --no-checksig --no-post install rpmkey.....filename What package gives you problems? Richard, thank you for your reply. I have got apt/synaptic working again by editing the gpg-checker.conf file as suggested by David. But why the problem suddenly occurred is a mystery. As far as I know I had done nothing which may have caused it. Thank you for the clear explanations. They are very useful to have and I have written them down and will work through them. Both gwdg and mathematik are back up to speed today. Cheers Keith

Thanks, Ken. I have found all the previous postings about rpmkeys. I don't remember ever having to install rpmkeys before. Previously, I'm certain I have just installed apt/synaptic, set up the sources list and it worked! Any way, tomorrow I will read through all the postings. Keith
