Oh dear! I don't like workarounds. That means the underlying problem is still there. I wonder what it could be and why it apparently happened all on its own? The only thing I did just before it started, was to download and install all of a YaST upgrade via Synaptic. I wonder if that could, somehow, have caused it? Tomorrow, I think I will do another installation of SUSE on my spare hard drive, install apt/synaptic and see how that is. Keith
