Which SuSE Linux/kernel version is running?
Sun Java Desktop System 2003 (SJDS) is said to be based on Suse Linux Desktop 1.0. In addition, CD1 (of 3) contains a Readme for Suse Linux Standard Server 8 and Installation and Administration Guides for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 (SLES 8), dated Nuremberg, 4th November 2003. But is it possible on the installed/running SJDS system to get confirmed which SuSE Linux/kernel version SJDS is actually running? What I have found regarding kernel version is /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB-athlon But isn't there also available Linux commands or SuSE (YaST)tools to query and get replied which kernel and which SuSE Linux Server (8.1 or 8.2?) are installed/running?
Hi Terje You can try less /etc/SuSE-release My generic SuSE 8.2 returns: SuSE Linux 8.2 (i586) VERSION = 8.2 /Christian Bjørnbak On Monday 05 January 2004 13:27, Terje J. Hanssen wrote:

Thanks to those of you who has answered. uname -r or uname -a confirms that SJDS is running kernel 2.4.19-4GB-athlon (i686) But /etc/SuSE-release (like /etc/sun-release) is changed by Sun to 'Sun Java Desktop System 2003, Version 1.0 and Release 1.0'. Maybe the kernel 2.4.19-4GB-athlon can tell if this is SuSE 8.1 or 8.2? Terje Michael Galloway skrev:

Just so you are not confused in the future, SJDS does -not- run the kernel. It is running on top of the kernel which provides the environment. uname -r will show the running kernel uname -a shows all information cat /etc//etc/SuSE-release will show the current release you are running. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)

Not confused, but agree. I should have expressed it more precisely :)
uname -r will show the running kernel uname -a shows all information
cat /etc//etc/SuSE-release will show the current release you are running.
Just to complete two alternatives to find the current running kernel version: 1) uname -r 2) cat /proc/version 3) rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz

"uname -a" or "uname -r" for just the running kernel version. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.
