[opensuse] What difference does a vanilla kernel make
Hi List, I am working on a bug which entails loading a vanilla kernel. I am basically in the dark as to what effect this will have on my system. I tried a kernel.org kernel once with 10.3 and could not get it to work, I plan to install the 2.6.27-rc2 vanilla rpm. Any pitfalls to be expected? Differences: -Lack of AppArmor -Different linux headers directory structure, so some (external) modules might build differently. -Configuration might be different -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Tons of unsuspected stuff. One more example: forward porting xen from 2.6.18 to current (or at least more-current) kernels. Brian K. Besides the mentioned opensuse additions to the vanilla kernel, like apparmor, netfilters (IIANM), xen, etc., just make sure you install the rpm via rpm -i and not U, which will add the kernel instead of replacing your present kernel, and it should be a situation you can use to work on the bug, but can easily go back to the full featured kernel when needed. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the help everyone, I had forgotten the rpm -i bit, Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
