[SLE] Linux driver petition
Found this on slashdot. Link to www.libranet.com/petition.html Sounds like a good idea fx We, members of the Linux community and the computing population in general, believe that you, the manufacturers of pc computing devices, should make available to Linux developers full specifications of your devices, so that Linux compatible device drivers can be produced for your products. If you feel this information is confidential, then we ask you to write, and make freely available, drivers for your products. We believe that Linux is not a second class operating system and that your focus on providing drivers for the Microsoft operating system only is misguided and disregards the many millions of Linux users. We ask you to take notice of companies who recognize the Linux community and who provide versions of their programs for both Microsoft and Linux. We feel that you cannot ignore the enormous and growing popularity of Linux and that efforts on your part to provide drivers and/or specifications will enhance your own sales efforts. Thank you for your attention. -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux Kernel 2.2.13 (but who cares?) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

..........<SNIP>..................................... I don't believe much in that kind of action. Manufacturers don't do business to please people. They do it to make money. As the number of Linux users grow, more manufacturers want to be on that market. It has already started. Meanwhile, if it doesn't already exist, a list of unsupported pieces of hardware due to lack of information from the maker could have some efficiency. What harm can it do? Anything to get the attention of the h/w manufacturers is a good thing in my opinion. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

These compaines are in it for the money. Some might not think there is enough of a market in the Linux area to pull a profit. If they receive a petition from 2,000,000 Linux users requesting drivers for their hardware, it means that if they want to use the drivers, they will have to logically have to own the hardware. These companies might know how big Linux really is. Think about it, the CEO and his board heard of Linux probably twice on CNN and that is it, they probably passed it off as a passing fad. But if they get millions of Linux users wanting to buy and use their hardware, they might change their mind about Linux and the abililty to make money in this market. Oh, and on an offtopic note, do you know roughly how many Linux users there are? Roughly about how many Apple users are there? I have a feeling that the number of Linux users is roughly the same as the amount of Apple users, can anyone (dis) prove this? I heard that there was about 10-12 million Linux users world wide, is this true? I would really like to know the facts on this, all I have is "hear-say" and rumors. Jack

The problem is how do you count? Is it the number of CDs sold? The number of downloads? Do servers count ? We need a census-) Nick -- -------------------------------------------------- Nick Zentena "Microsoft has unjustifiably jeopardized the stability and security of the operating system." True. The number of CD sold couldn't be used, I know alot of users that use their freinds Linux CD's to install, and what about all these people that goto ftp.redhat.com or ftp.slackware.com and just download the distro and never buy a CD? The number of downloads couldn't be used, since well allot of people just buy the CD and never download the distro. Also many people run Linux as their Server, but use Windows NT (or are forced to, as in my case) as their workstation, or use Linux at home and use (or are forced to) WindowsXX/Mac at work/school, etc. I don't know. Lets try this: OK EVERYONE USING LINUX RAISE THEIR HANDS! Ok, quick, lets starting counting :) Jack

Doh! And if people aren't pleased you often don't make money for long. Companies know that for every person asking for something often 10X that number really want it. The only problem I see is some idoit writing an offensive letter. Or mail bombing a company about support. If we play nice it can do good. BTW everybody write lotus and ask about Smartsuite for Linux-) Nick -- -------------------------------------------------- Nick Zentena "Microsoft has unjustifiably jeopardized the stability and security of the operating system."
