I'm still having a printer problem. I can't print from applications or the command line (lpr); in either case I get an email: apsfilter: unable to print job reply_offer.txt I've tried re-setting up the printer in Yast 2 and 1. In Yast 2 the test print ("hello world") to lp0 works, but there is no /dev/lp0. Here are the lp? files I have in /dev/ jim@yoda:~ > ll /dev/lp? crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 0 Jan 19 02:35 /dev/lp0 crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 1 Jan 19 02:35 /dev/lp1 crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 2 Jan 19 02:35 /dev/lp2 jim@yoda:~ > Yast2 always gives an error that no lp0 exists, even after setting up a print queue. hi ! does any one know a geek code genarator for SuSE ??
Look in /etc/printcap. You will see references like lp3, lp4 as below. You can print to these using lpr -Plp3 (filename) or lpr -Plp4 (filename) ### BEGIN apsfilter: ### /etc/gs.upp/y2prn_lp.upp lp ### # Warning: Configured for apsfilter, do not edit the labels! # apsfilter setup Tue Feb 6 08:37:02 CST 2001 # lp-mono|lp3|y2prn_lp.upp--auto-lp|y2prn_lp.upp auto:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--auto-lp:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--auto-lp/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--auto-lp/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/y2prn_lp.upp--auto-lp:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh: # raw|lp4|y2prn_lp.upp--raw-lp|y2prn_lp.upp raw:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--raw-lp:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--raw-lp/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/y2prn_lp.upp--raw-lp/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/y2prn_lp.upp--raw-lp:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh: ========================================================== On Thursday 03 May 2001 07:08, Jim Sabatke wrote:

Yast2 always gives an error that no lp0 exists, even after setting up a print queue.
This all started happening after an auto-update of software through Yast2. The printer was working fine after the initial 7.1 install.
Please help,

I recall a similar problem with one of our machines... you can try: 0) Take a look at SuSE's database, they have posted a solution to printing problems involving 7.1 More "home made" solutions: 1) Install the printer through YaST (not YaST2) (I guess you should remove all current configurations). If that's not enough, then 2) Remove all CUPS rpms and again using YaST setup your printers... Using CUPS was the only way I ever got my printing to work right. Ed Harrison broadcasting on ----/ / _ ---/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ --/ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / -/____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ by SuSE(6.4), Kernel 2.4.2, X 4.0.3 or Warp 4, FP12 or Windows98 (running in vmware 2.0.3 for fun) PolarBarMailer 1.1.19a with IBM JDK 1.1.8
I've looked through the database and have only found fixes going back to 6.4. I think I looked through all the 7.1 stuff. One of the help pages shows that lpd should be running and it is not. I can't find a start script for lpd on my system. If this is required, what package contains the lpd startup code. The lprold package doesn't seem to have a startup script and everything in the files list is in place. One other note, after an lpr command, the printer's ready light comes on, but nothing prints. TIA, Jim Álvaro A. Novo wrote:

One other thing: The URL for 7.1 printer problems: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/bugs71.html is lost in the bit bucket somewhere. Jim Álvaro A. Novo wrote:
