I've looked through the database and have only found fixes going back to 6.4. I think I looked through all the 7.1 stuff. One of the help pages shows that lpd should be running and it is not. I can't find a start script for lpd on my system. If this is required, what package contains the lpd startup code. The lprold package doesn't seem to have a startup script and everything in the files list is in place. One other note, after an lpr command, the printer's ready light comes on, but nothing prints. This all started happening after an auto-update of software through Yast2. The printer was working fine after the initial 7.1 install.
I recall a similar problem with one of our machines... you can try:
0) Take a look at SuSE's database, they have posted a solution to printing problems involving 7.1
More "home made" solutions:
1) Install the printer through YaST (not YaST2) (I guess you should remove all current configurations). If that's not enough, then
2) Remove all CUPS rpms and again using YaST setup your printers...
Hope it helps,
