Hi; I have a problem installing tar-packages.Is yast 1 or 2 capable of doing this job?(Sorry, use 7.0) In fact, how to install tar correctly? Gzip is installed... Thank's Jean-Paul Faessen
Hi, tars are usually referred to as tar balls, not packages per se but rather an arcive of some group of files and directories in some cases.....funny enough the tar utility was really used to back-up to tape.....I think "tar" stands for Tape Archive....might be wrong on that...anyway...tars that have tgz or tar.gz have also been compressed when archieved. If you have some tar that has been placed into a directory which you feel comfortable extracting into issue tar -xvf filename or if compressed tar -xzvf for those which are compressed..... You will find that often applications which are source not binary also need to be compiled and installed, what are you trying to do? Regards, Jon On Fri, 4 May 2001, Jean-Paul Faessen wrote:
