[opensuse] Sun to Release Java under GPL

This will be a technical discussion. If the package is working better than the binary ones, then we'll add it for sure... Please, try to at least find a way to get the latest Java available. It currently quite pain to get it (I'm running 10.0 and can't find them from smart) as SUN provides some windows style installer for it and not rpm. (Yeah, I have already mentioned my views on this installer ... :-) -- HG. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What do you mean by "latest"? Do you mean just the 1.5 branch or consistent updates of 1.5. For example, I'm on 1.5.0_07-b03 from SMART (I think) and I believe that the current release is _09 by Sun. I don't really care about that part. Just curious - what is the problem with the installer for you? Oh, and by the way. Duke is going OSS as well... https://duke.dev.java.net/ ...maybe it can hang with Tux somewhere in cyberspace. -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Interesting. I hadn't thought of it in that light. I was just bringing attention to it, because openSUSE doesn't include non-OSS software, which currently relegates Java to "other" status. Currently, one has to install Java separately from the the distro. I'm guessing that won't be an issue in the future. -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There has always been a repository with non-oss stuff and a CD with such stuff - and Sun Java has always been on that media. Those are integrated somehow and can be installed with the distro, since 10.1 you just add an extra "Addon media", Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Well, I'm kind of a newbie. I've only been using SUSE since 9.1. In any case, I have answered more than my share of "how do I install this extra stuff" questions. :) I'm just saying that it would be preferable if it were supplied with the distro and being OSS it can be when it is finalized. -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You mean, like on the DVD? Well, it is. Or like in the Boxed version? Well, it is. So it is available with the distro in various ways. houghi -- To have a nice mailinglist experience, follow the guidelines below:

Yes but it can be moved from non-oss to oss once it's released and the
packagers made the RPMs.
Note that all in all it doesn't make a big difference for users (at
least not atm), but it will make a big difference for developers - not
the fact that it won't be in non-oss any more, but that it's being GPLd ;)
cheers

Yeah, I was just talking to some of my staff today about that. We are all developing in C# (and VB for older stuff) and had made that decision because they didn't know where Java would be. (I've only been on board for about six months.) Now that it is going to be GPL'd, we may make a better effort to support it. I have a lot of people on my staff with Java experience, so the timing would be right. -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Oh, man houghi is here! I gotta watch myself. /me reminds self to pay better attention to posts... :) Actually I was referring to the download version. I didn't buy 10.1 and noticed Java wasn't included on the five CD set. I did end up getting it when I installed the DVD from Linux Magazine, however. -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This has been in the works forever. Sun keeps saying they'll open Java and the changing their minds. This time looks more like the real thing than the previous go-arounds, but it's not done until it's done. It is very unlikely it has any relationship to the Novell / Microsoft deal.
...
In any case, I now have no need to even think about learning Mono .NET. That was weighing on me and is not any longer an issue. :)
I know little about C#, but I understand it has some interesting features. But then, I think I know even less about Java 6 (though I write Java code pretty much daily). Exactly right and if the language that is used by many large companies (banks etc.) is open source, runs on Linux and I can earn my living working with it that would be ideal. .NET is so similiar to Java and the EE concepts it is funny. The one big difference is Sun uses java for their mission critical stuff where as MS shy's away from .NET since it has not been tested yet etc. .... The whole Mono thing is strange the only huge befit for me as a developer it offers is the ability to develop on Linux. Don't slam me I admit I know next to nothing about it, but I think MS will put as many tied into the OS features as possible for their official .NET platform that Mono will have a hard time keeping up.
