Hello, I've got an ADSL connection that is pretty speedy for me. Using Netscape and the javascript at www.dslreports.com I consistently get 1 to 1.2 mbps downloads when I am logged as myself. I installed only Netscape Communicator 4.73 for my wife and when I log on as her I am only getting 275 to 300 kbps, one third the speed!!! I can't figure what the hell the difference is. Netscape is setup the same for both of us. Any ideas on what I can check to see why she gets such low speed???? Oh yeah, I'm using kdm and WindowMaker if it matters. Hi Greg, This is a very much interesting link, was it (per chance)??: "dslreports.com - Speed test " at: http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0 and hitting the "try this javascript speed-test" link: http://www.dslreports.com/sredir Mine gives me, from _windoze_ (i have not a SuSE setup yet) : (Much updated one... thought) [Your download speed : 215384 bps, or 215 kbps. Browsers would show : about a 26.2 k/sec transfer rate.] I've got a 256/128Kb (in/out) connection here at Spain from TerraNetworks. I use a "3Com HomeConnect ADSL Módem PCI" 3CP3617. ---- Greg Thomas wrote:

Low speed?, detail your contract band-wide, please.

Do not know about the "kdm and WindowMaker" related effects, did you have previous notice of any?? Would you please detail setup. Is it the same machine your wife's and your's?? I've got a Westell external WireSpeed modem, thankfully.

I get way more speed than my contract, but that's not the problem, the problem is with Netscape as I detailed in a later message. My contract is for 384/128 but I'm pretty close to the central office and the lines are good.

No, after troubleshooting it didn't have to do with kdm or Windowmaker.
Would you please detail setup.
Is it the same machine your wife's and your's??
Same machine, two different accounts.
Have you got a small net??
Yes. The problem appears to be with several lines in liprefs.js that Netscape generates with the newer version. Thankfully my account was set up before I upgraded to SuSE's 4.73 RPM otherwise I wouldn never have figured out the problem. I am running Netscape without SuSE's wrapper. These lines are not in my original (faster) liprefs.js so they seem to be the problem (when I deleted them in my wife's she got the same speed as me): user_pref("network.dnsAttempt", 5); user_pref("network.dnsCacheExpiration", 5000); user_pref("network.dnsTimout", 120); user_pref("network.max_connections", 8); user_pref("network.tcpbufsize", 256); user_pref("network.tcptimeout", 10); user_pref("security.enable_java", false); Thanks, Greg -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
