What SUSE/openSUSE version you are using? What kind of computer? What kind of monitor? -- Regards, Rajko. Visit http://en.opensuse.org/MiniSUSE

Make sure your using the correct driver (no matter if you used nvidia installer). In your: /etc/X11/xorg.conf you should have: In section Module you must have: Load "glx" Section "Module" Load ´other modules´ Load "glx" Load ´other modules´ EndSection In your section Device you must have the 3D accel driver: "nvidia" (NOT: "nv"!!!) Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce4 MX 420" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection About the possibilities to change your resolution. Do you have the preffered resolution in the section Screen??? I for myself run 1600x1200@78Hz /Peo
Ok so many things: fist the conf of my computer: Athon 2800 256M Opensuse 10.1 i 586 nividia geforce mx4 4000 In my "module" is type this: Section "module" Load freetype Load type1 Load dbe Load glx Load extmod Load v4l EndSection and the other (Device):
Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce4 MX 420" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection
the resolution i like is 1152x864_75hz!
So we i change the xorg.conf the module to just "glx" and "other module" the screen go to shell. And i have to run the sax2 and everthing back to normal! so someone have any solution! Be health

Is this right? Do you have nvidia gforce mx4 4000 ?
In my "module" is type this:
Section "module" Load freetype Load type1 Load dbe Load glx Load extmod Load v4l EndSection
This is correct.
and the other (Device):
Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce4 MX 420" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection
This says that your graphics card is "Geforce4 MX 420" (nvidia) and that is the same that I have. In the first part of this mail you say that your graphics card is "nividia geforce mx4 4000". What card do you have? "GeForce4 MX 420" or "nividia geforce mx4 4000" ??

The module part is correct. You MUST load "glx" and the others should also be there. A friend of mine also have "nvidia Gforce4 Mx 420" but he want´s to run Suse 10.1 (I use 10.0) and for him the latest driver didn´t work. Try "ia32_1.0-7182" instead, that worked for my friend in Suse 10.1. (This is only my opinion, and It might not count because many others knows much more about it, but I would choose to run Suse 10.0 instead and let the "pro" take care of 10.1) /Peo

When X can't start, the best way is to see /var/log directory, files Xorg.0.log and SaX.log. They contain details what xorg server or sax tried, what failed, what passed the test. That way you can see why your preferred resolution is not accepted. If sax or xorg server can't find modeline for your resolution listed in Modes section that is usable for both, card and monitor, than it will be not used. I would check details in Monitor section and compare with monitor specifications. If it is listed exactly what the manual tells than you are probably out of luck, but if it is not, than change values for HorizSync and VertRefresh to those listed by the manual. Than run init 3 sax2 -s to force usage of xorg.conf instead of sax HW information. You can also try sax2 --vesa 0:1152x864@75 to see is that resolution possible with your hardware. For more options look in man sax2 BTW, what is the reason that you want that pretty exotic resolution with card that can much more. -- Regards, Rajko. Visit http://en.opensuse.org/MiniSUSE
