-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello All, I have been holding this off for a long time but really want to upgrade my office desktop to 10.1. I have dell dimension 9150 which is running perfectly on 10.0. Can I just upgrade, or is it better to start from scratch? I do understand that starting from scratch is what most of you will advice but I had to install drivers for my ethernet card, video-card etc, I thought an upgrade might let me skip those. Is this advisable? a) Doing a from-scratch install is always (well, 99.9% of the time) a better idea. Upgrading is inherently full of potholes and inherently problematic. b) Don't upgrade to 10.1. Wait for 10.2 (i wish i had). The upgrade tools in 10.1 are fundamentally broken and you will experience Much Grief with them. (Even if that Grief is only the pain you'll have to go through to replace the update/upgrade tools.) Granted, aside from the upgrade tools, 10.1 is a fine distro, but the broken upgrade tools are enough reason, IMO, to keep the fingers away from it.

No, it's not advisable. If you upgrade, those drivers and whatnot will likely also be replaced/upgraded, or even made inactive (e.g., by changes to the kernel). -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Watts
Hi,
dont upgrade to 10.1!!!........
i would only recommend it to someone who wants to check out xgl maybe, thats about it.
i cant believe it was even released, the update structure is completely broken, what i consider one of the most important features in an operating system.
im not even sure if i can recommend 10.2 right now. i installed 10.2 alpha4 on a test box, and theyre doing some funky things with the menu system and such..... even thats broken at this point. i couldnt get it to work. tried updating, and the same problems exist..... brand new install, and dependency issues?, but, ill give them the benefit of the doubt........ it is not released yet.
STAY WITH 10.0!!!!!!!!!

Benefit of the doubt? Recommend it right now??? It is ALPHA! Alpha in computer science terms means "this is known not to work, don't install unless you are a tester or developer and are prepared for things to break and to give constructive feedback in the form of bug reports or patches" Complaining about the non-working status of an alpha release basically is the same as saying you don't know what it is
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Thanks everyone for taking your time to give me advice. I will hold off on this. Its one thing if it was my home pc, I dont want to be wasting time fixing stuff at work, especially when I am showing people here that Linux is more productive than using windows for development. FWIW, I just completed a nearly trouble-free upgrade to 10.1 from 10.0
on a rather complicated multiprocessor system with scsi, sata, and usb
devices. I used 5 CDs copied from an opensuse repository. Only
difficulty was that somehow Yast didn't do a proper Suseconfig on the
gtk2 (gtk+) rpms, so that pango failed. I went again to Yast,
indicated the already installed gtk2's (no dependency problems), and
hit "finish" so that a suseconfig was forced.
Before upgrading I did, of course, copy the etc directory, then
reinstalled it intact after upgrade. My /home and /usr/local reside on
different partitions. Do check the media as Yast requests before
updating. And do check the files which Yast chooses to replace before
the upgrade.
As far as performance and features go, I don't see that 10.1 gives
much additional. However, I wanted to compile some progs which
required the libs of 10.1 and it would have been more trouble to
resolve all the dependencies for all the new libs.
In sum, upgrade to 10.1 was much less hassle than had been upgrade
from 9.1 to 10.0.

I always go the upgrade route. This system went 7.1, 7.3, fresh install, 8.1, 8.2, 9.1, 9.3, 10.1. No problems (not unspected ones, at least). Of course, I always do a complete backup before starting. Nevertheless, the things you installed from outside sources you will have to install again - some of them you may keep if they don't conflict. You will be asked (you should, at least). - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
