[opensuse] X server terminates suddenly on FX5200 with nvidia driver
Hi, I've got a fresh install of opensuse 10.3. Worked well and I am stunned with the improvements compared to the previous version. However... The X server seems to terminate randomly (black screen) /var/log/messages states "kdm[2786]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly" and I also find some lines beginning with "kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00)" I can reproduce the problem by starting Yast --> hardware --> hardware info. Yast starts probing and when I see "monitor" screen turns black. I got a FX5200 videocard with the latest nvidiadriver installed (100.14.19-4) Monitor is configured as (xorg.conf): Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool" DisplaySize 338 270 HorizSync 30-83 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "MD6155AH" Option "DPMS" VendorName "MED" VertRefresh 50-76 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection Xorg.0.log states: "(WW) NVIDIA(0): Option "CalcAlgorithm" is not used" I've got a nvidia-bug-report.log if needed. Is this a bug in yast or is my configuration not yet what is should be? Hi Sander, it seems same problem as mine. I have to see is it present in 32 bit installation. Can you run test described in this mail: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2007-10/msg02372.html just to check that is the same case. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Rajko, I ran the test upto 4 times and everything went smooth. Got a 32 bit system (P4, intel 865 chipset). The problem I have now is that the general lettertype went suddenly from a rather wide one to a narrow one I got in 10.2. Standard lettertype is "Sans serif". This type seems not to be installed on my system. I liked the wide one better. Any clues? Thanks. By now I know that on 32 bit system, with default kernel and default nvidia driver it locks up too. It is better with xorg.conf from 10.2, so I have to see difference in used options, to see what driver module makes trouble.

I don't know much about fonts, but if you suspect that fonts are missing please compare /usr/share/fonts for 10.2 and 10.3. That is directory that contains all installed fonts. I compared 2 of them: /usr/share/fonts/Type1 is the same, /usr/share/fonts/truetype there are some differences for instance DejaVuSerif-BoldItalic.ttf seems to be before DejaVuSerif-BoldOblique.ttf BTW, from other discussions here you can try to setup above mentioned DejaVu fonts. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you install via Yast or by downloading the driver and running sh NameOfDriver -q I have an FX 5200 running on my home system with opensuse 10.3 (32 bit version) When I install the nvidia driver by adding the nvidia repository and using Yast,t hen I experience lockups. I installed the latest driver by downlowading it and then running the script. So far it seems to be working fine. Mike -- Michael A. How long has your PC been running so far with this driver ? I downloaded the nvidia.ymp and this installed the drivers for me. Been running now for 2 hours and still going good. I have everything crossed this end. ;-) -- Kindest regards, Clive http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. Rajko,

The problem first occurred while screensaver was on. I don't know which one because I use the random one.
I can reproduce the problem by starting Yast --> hardware --> hardware info. Yast starts probing and when I see "monitor" screen turns black. Not any more

I'll check later, thanks. First look and every necessary link seems to be there.
Got to go trough whole README, search http://bugzilla.novell.com , look change logs, which will take time.
I remember that somewhere was mentioned problem with Xorg and probing, but I can't locate that article.

Update on the FX5200 problem: Problem seems to be solved. No more lock-ups yet and Yast--> hardware --> hardware info works again. What did I do? - did the test starting X server manually several times --> no problem. - fiddling around in sax2 with monitor settings (tried to change ratio from 4/5 to 3/4 and back) (got a 17" with 1280*1024) - started NVIDIA X server settings several times but did not write to Xorg.conf I think sax2 got the right configuration in the end BTW I installed the NVidia driver with Yast at first update (just added the repository in the installation process ). During this update there was also a kernel security update.
