[opensuse] New kernel - 12.1 not shutting down properly
A few days ago, there was a new kernel update for openSUSE 12.1. Since then, I've noticed that my ThinkPad E520 will no longer shut off. Also, I'm unable to recover from sleep mode, after closing the cover. Has anyone else experienced this? tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

On power down, when I press Esc to see what's happening, the shutdown appears to halt at: Disabling swaps. Detaching loop devices. Detaching DM devices. [ 79.261167] Disabling IRQ #16 When I close the lid, and re-open it, there are 3 lines displayed: [ 98.864291] Freezing user space processes ... (elspased 0.01 seconds) done. [ 98.875344] Freezing remaining freezable tasks ... (elapsed 0.05 seconds) done. [ 98.930340] Suspending console(s) (use no_conssole_suspend to debug) At this point only pressing the power button has any effect and that is to power down the computer. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes other have noticed this. In my case, either a subsequent update has helped (perhaps sysvinit?) or it is intermittent or dependent on what I've run or have running at shutdown because it's been fine the last couple of times. Apparently it's also in Bugzilla and a fix is in progress. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, I had the same problem with the computer not shutting down properly after the kernel update. The way that I resolved it was to add http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/standard/ as a repository, then do a zypper dup. The kernel from this repository works great, and shuts down properly. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I like a bit of adventure in my life but when it comes to kernels I take a more cautious approach :-) . I substituted the word 'stable' for the 'HEAD' in the above URL and use the kernel(s) which come from the 'stable' repo. BC Hi, yeah, that's what everyone on this list says. But I haven't been bitten yet, so I boldly forge on ahead where others fear to tread.
Actually, the head kernels seem to work better on my problem Toshiba laptop. That's the one that the distro kernels won't operate the cooling fan. With the Head kernels, it sometimes works, depending on ......... I had already used the head kernel on my laptop in search of fan cooling, so I was reasonably assured it would work on my desktop computer. It did, and now the desktop shuts down normally besides. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I've experienced the similar problem with my Asus laptop but I got rid of this isssue replacing desktop kernel with PAE one. -- WBR Gary Trotcko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I run 64 bit openSUSE and PAE is a 32 bit kernel. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
