[opensuse] Printer Canon Pixma iP4700
I assembled a new computer (Intel Core i3) and installed Linux SuSE 11.4 but... I can't setup my Canon Pixma iP4700 printer. The /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs folder contains many folders like brother, epson, hp etc. but not a canon. How can I fix this? Canon has a remarkable poor record of working with the open-source community, which might explain the dearth of CUPS drivers for their products. I purchased one of their all-in-one printers a few years ago thinking I'd at least be able to get the printer portion working. Bzzzt. I gave up. I use the printer now by loading their Windows-only drivers into an instance of Win-XP running on VirtualBox. It works well enough, and I can use the Windows to run my income tax program too. Not very satisfying, but it's functional. You might have a look in the gutenprint area, there is some mention of Canon in there. Did you try turboprint? It is comercial linux print drivers. I had to use them to get my old canon printer to print properly. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Hi Fir, Lew is right. Canon has, also IMHO, poor support for their printers and scanner. For your printer, canon provides drivers for it at their web site. However if it is like some of their other drivers it will limit You to a specific resolution and Color printing only. But it will work. As Lew falso mentioned, You also have canon support on Guttenprint. You can try it but, with openSUSE 11.4, it may be difficult for you to find a recent package of it. You may have to build it yourself. Look at the Evergreen repositories for an updated version of Guttenprint. Do not despair. I do have a Multifunction Canon device working on openSUSE. Both scanner and printer over WiFi. Good luck. -- Rui Santos Veni, Vidi, Linux On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 10:29 PM, fir delplancke <fb248366@skynet.be> wrote:
