I assembled a new computer (Intel Core i3) and installed Linux SuSE 11.4 but... I can't setup my Canon Pixma iP4700 printer.
The /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs folder contains many folders like brother, epson, hp etc. but not a canon. How can I fix this?
Canon has a remarkable poor record of working with the open-source community, which might explain the dearth of CUPS drivers for their products. I purchased one of their all-in-one printers a few years ago thinking I'd at least be able to get the printer portion working. Bzzzt. I gave up. I use the printer now by loading their Windows-only drivers into an instance of Win-XP running on VirtualBox. It works well enough, and I can use the Windows to run my income tax program too. Not very satisfying, but it's functional. You might have a look in the gutenprint area, there is some mention of Canon in there.
