I have made my attempt to recover the data from the failed drive. I used:
dd_rescue -B 1b -b 4M -A -v -l rescue.log /dev/hda /dev/hdb
to mirror the drive to a fresh 250G drive. The process worked as expected (3 hours give or take and approximately 5000 errors). I then tried to get the mirrored copy in mountable form:
reiserfsck (Gave error and said run reiserfsck -rebuild-sb) reiserfsck -rebuild-sb (completed successfully and said to run -rebuild-tree) reiserfsck -rebuild-tree (completed, from what I could tell - successfully)
Which partition/drive exactly did you ask reiserfsck to check?
/dev/hdb2 (the rescued mirrored copy of /dev/hda2 from the bad drive)
But, after this whole process, I still couldn't mount /dev/hdb2 (the crashed drive was hda1 - swap, hda2 - /)
Anything you can see that I did wrong? Any other thoughts on what I could try to see if there is any recoverable data on the disk? Or, with 5000 errors on the drive, is this just a case where the drive is FUBAR?
Have you tried to see if fdisk can recognize any partition or file system on the copied disk now? What does fdisk -l /dev/hdb say?
Sandy
No, not yet. I'll give it a try after I crack the box open again and report back. Thanks for your help! -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. RANKIN LAW FIRM, PLLC 510 Ochiltree Street Nacogdoches, Texas 75961 (936) 715-9333 (936) 715-9339 fax www.rankinlawfirm.com --
