USB still broken in SuSE's 2.6.18 kernel
I have been trying to get a fairly simple memory card reader working with SuSE 10.1. The errors I get look like this: Oct 24 17:04:12 koetsu kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sdb Oct 24 17:04:12 koetsu kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0 Oct 24 17:04:12 koetsu kernel: Vendor: Microtec Model: CameraMate (DPCM Rev: 0100 Oct 24 17:04:12 koetsu kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00 Oct 24 17:04:12 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 Oct 24 17:04:12 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: device not accepting address 2, error -32 Oct 24 17:04:13 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 Oct 24 17:04:13 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: device not accepting address 2, error -32 Oct 24 17:04:13 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 Oct 24 17:04:13 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: device descriptor read/64, error -32 Oct 24 17:04:13 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: device descriptor read/64, error -32 Oct 24 17:04:14 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 Oct 24 17:04:14 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: device descriptor read/64, error -32 Oct 24 17:04:14 koetsu kernel: usb 4-1: USB disconnect, address 2 I have seen similar reports elsewhere and tried removing/inserting the various USB hci-hcd modules and playing with the old_scheme_first parameter but with no change in behaviour. I tested two different hardware configurations, both running the 2.6.16.21-0.25 based kernels, with no luck. Then I tried with the latest Knoppix 5.0 distribution, using a 2.6.17 based kernel, and got no errors! Thinking that the problem was fixed in a later kernel I downloaded all the 2.6.18.1-6 bits and pieces from the Factory but still it doesn't work. Arghh! This is the last thing stopping me chucking Windows off my parents PC. Actually it is already chucked and I need to get this back up and running pretty soon and I really, really want to keep SuSE as that is what I use on all my machines.

I've not found any issues with all my various USB devices on my systems running 10.1, but just out of curiosity. Is that a USB 1 or 2 device? I remember there being some issue - way back when - with USB 2 devices trying to be read as USB 1 devices. There was something you had to change in the boot order so that USB 2 was loaded first and not UsB 1. According to My Computer, I'm running an earlier kernel (2.6.16) than you, so I imagine that isn't the problem. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request

It is a usb2 full speed device.

Yes, I've tried all the magic runes with loading/unloading various combinations of ohci-hcd, ehci-hcd & uhci-hcd modules to no effect. It is only recognised at all by the uhci-hcd module.

It was the same symptoms for me with the SuSE 2.6.16 kernel as well as SuSE 2.6.18. But Knoppix 5.0.1, with a 2.6.17 kernel, works OK which is pretty frustrating. It is just a simple CompactFlash/SD memory card reader. It may be easier to find a different one that will work with the SuSE kernels. Can anyone recommend a memory card reader that is known to work with SuSE 10.1? Cosmo

It's been a while, but I now know that a Gembird All in 1 XD card reader works fine with SuSE 10.1, kernel 2.6.16.21-0.25-bigsmp. Cosmo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You could try and see what modules is Knoppix loading, and use the same configuration. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I tried that but it didn't point to any particular module being the problem. It was only being recognised as a 1.1 full speed device anyway and the new reader is being accessed as a proper 2.0 high speed device and reads more types of memory card. Easy fix for less than a tenner. Cosmo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
