You could try and see what modules is Knoppix loading, and use the same configuration.
I tried that but it didn't point to any particular module being the problem. It was only being recognised as a 1.1 full speed device anyway and the new reader is being accessed as a proper 2.0 high speed device and reads more types of memory card. Easy fix for less than a tenner.
