It was the same symptoms for me with the SuSE 2.6.16 kernel as well as SuSE 2.6.18. But Knoppix 5.0.1, with a 2.6.17 kernel, works OK which is pretty frustrating.
You could try and see what modules is Knoppix loading, and use the same configuration.
